I want to be a free range parent. I grew up in not the safest neighborhood and from 13-16 walked over 1/2 a mile to school everyday. There was no sidewalk and racially I was a minority there. I do remember being really nervous and we didn't have cell phones back then, but looking back it gave me independence and confidence.
For DS I want to let him walk to parks/school/etc. when he is appropriate age but in this society of helicopter parenting I'm nervous of the cops getting called on me. I think it's ridiculous that I have to worry about this.
It's a great way to give the kids independence as they walk to and from the park alone and can leave whenever they like (as long as they aren't on a field trip) but it is supervised by community/school volunteers so it's not completely sending them off on their own.
And the park is in window view for me which is an added bonus

We have this same thing, and it's amazing. Our nine year old just started riding his bike to and from our house, which is six blocks from his mom's, and 7 from his school. I am more committed to independence, personally, and have already convinced DH and their mom to allow him to go to the local park, only four bocks away and not on a busy street, for rec. He's so excited for summer.
