Sorry this took so long to post. So, on Thursday, June 18th I had an induction scheduled for 9 am due to pregnancy hypertension (aka white coat hypertension,) but I decided it was best to follow the doctor's advice and not wait til LO decided to show up on his own. Was admitted around 9:30, given an IV and settled into our labor and delivery room. When they checked me I was still 1 cm, 50% effaced and very posterior. First dose of oral cytotec as given at 10:30 am followed by a second dose at 2:30 pm. When my OB checked me at 6:30, I was only at 2 cm, but having mild contractions so she wanted to let me labor on my own for a while. At 11 pm, I was still at 2 cm so they gave me the cervidil which after 2 hours starting coming half way out and hurting like a bitch. I slept til about 3 am and then started having stronger contractions. I called the nurse in and then my water broke at 4 am. When I got checked, they told me I was 4 cm and could get the epidural but I thought I'd wait a little while. By the time I got it at 6 am, I couldn't tolerate the contractions and applaud all you ladies that go med free. I was checked again at 9:30 Friday morning and was at 7 cm and then they started a low drip of pitocin, which was increased at 10 am. By 12 pm I was fully dilated and we did some practice pushes but I couldn't feel much, so my midwife suggested to turn off the epidural. Half hour later, after 20 minutes of pushing (on my left side), Matthew Victor was born on Friday, June 19th, at 1:59 pm.
He cried and peed on me right away and we got to do skin to skin and wait about 15 minutes before cutting the umbilical cord (my sister did the honors) b/c DH was solely behind me the entire time so he wouldn't pass out. Baby got an apgar score of 9 and doing really well. Problems started after moving to the Mother and Baby floor where the nurses were absent and not helpful at all. We actually heard them arguing with CNA's on who would clean the rooms. It was very difficult to get baby to latch because my breasts are so big, but we are slowly getting the hang of it. I had to start supplementing with formula because he lost too much weight and became dehydrated because I unknowingly thought that whatever my body was producing was enough for him. Big mistake on my end, but I know better.
Best part was when my OB showed up around 6 because she was supposed to do the delivery and said she really thought I would've had a longer labor. The midwife was really amazing and calm so it worked out regardless. I do think my OB was sleep deprived, because when she came in to see me, she said, "Katherine [the midwife] told me you pushed like a real tramp! I *think* she meant champ but we pretended not to hear that and she pretended she didn't say it, Ha!
And now I will attempt pictures.
