Play date and questionably sick child

My LO has a play date scheduled for tomorrow afternoon with her best little buddy from her old daycare. I'm super excited for her to see her because she still asks for her all the time, even after being apart for a couple months! 

My question is - DD has had a bad cough over the last week or so, but has otherwise been fine (eating/sleeping fine, still playing like normal, just wakes up sounding like she smokes a pack a day and has the usual winter runny nose and an occasional (but nasty sounding) cough. Her daycare called today and said she has a fever of 101 - but no other symptoms, still eating/playing/sleeping fine, etc. DH is on baby duty today, so I haven't yet seen her myself. I don't know if the fever is related to her cold or the fact that she has two more teeth coming in on bottom. 

Question is - what do I do about her pending playdate? Should I just let the other mom know and have her make the decision? Should I wait until tomorrow and see how LO is feeling/if she still has a fever then? I will say that the one other time that this daycare sent her home for a fever, she didn't have any temp when I took it at home. They seem to take temps there throughout the day just to see if kids have them, without having any reason for taking it in the first place. WWYD?

I would personally take her temp when you get home and if she still has a fever I would let the other mom know just in case and let her make the decision. I would want to know ahead of time.

I would wait until the morning and see how lo is feeling/if she has a fever. If it's a morning play date though that may not work and you may have to make the call tonight.

Whenever a mom asks me if it's ok to bring their kid over with a fever it's awkward for me to say no. I never mind when a play date gets rescheduled for fever or something.

I tend to be a bit more on the paranoid side with illness though so take that with a grain of salt.

I hope that it's nothing and that the play date can go on as scheduled!

I'd plan on keeping the play date but giving the other mom a head's up. I go more by his behavior then temp or cough these days, unless we're talking a higher temp.

I would wait until tomorrow and make the call then. If she has a fever, I'd probably opt out just to be safe. If she just has a runny nose/cough, I probably wouldn't sweat it.

BUT...it sounds like all the kiddos in DS's class have the same cough/runny nose and they're all still going to daycare each day, so maybe I'm biased in that regard. I think it's just that time of year.

My dd though has been the same also with a runny nose and cough. She plays and acts just fine so to me I think it could just be the time of year.

I agree with the above. If it's a cold I would keep the play date. If you give the mom a heads up it might sound like a bigger deal than it is and like you're trying to get out of it. I figure daycare parents are used to seeing kids with a cold and won't freak out if it's just a little cough/runny nose as long as you're diligent about hand washing and nose wiping.

See how she is tonight. Em has a lot of the same symptoms and I picked her up early from daycare yesterday, also with 101. If I was the other mother, I'd want to know and decide for myself.

Our play date isn't until mid-afternoon, so I will probably wait and see until at least tonight, maybe tomorrow morning. Since they are in daycare too, I assume they are used to colds - but I also know that the two of them will be giving hugs and getting close, and I don't want to pass anything to her. But depending on the weather tomorrow, they may wind up cancelling anyway, so maybe it's best to wait a little longer and see. I just hate to disappoint last minute.

I guess I am pretty much on board with all PP. I would monitor and see how she is tomorrow but also let the other mom know. If it is just the end of a cold the other mom probably won't care.

I think there's a difference between a little bit of snot and the tail end of a cold and a full-blown fever of 101.

I agree with this. I probably would go if it was a cold but fever is different to me. It could very well be her teeth coming in and if that's the cAse her fever could be gone tomorrow.

The only other piece I'll add is if my kid gets sent home from school for a fever regardless of why they have one they can't come back until they have been fever free for 24 hours. I'm sure the mom would understand if you rescheduled.

Yes, my friends twins were diagnosed with the flu with this set of symptoms last week. I'd probably cancel.

G had something very similar this week. Started like a cold, 101 one afternoon, back to regular cold symptoms (but with a nasty cough) the next day. I agree with pps - see how she's feeling in the morning. You may change your mind and think she needs extra rest. If she seems fine but just cough/runny nose I would also just run it by the other mom. I would let my daughter play with a child who had experienced that, but I can understand how some may not with a fever less than 24 hours before.

eta these symptoms are also common for a mild respiratory infection, which is nbd unless the fever gets high as far as I know.

FWIW, I brought Em to the pedi today with the same symptoms and duration, and she's got pneumonia.

Update: I emailed the mom Friday night and let her know. She suggested we check in at noontime to see how lo was feeling and due to weather. By noon, her temp was 99 (without any Advil) but still coughing and runny nose. Snow had pretty much stopped and we were plowed out on both ends. She said she figures her daughter is exposed to the same every day in daycare, so they were fine with it if we were. They came over and had a great time, once they warmed up to each other again!

Today, lo seems to be doing a lot better. No fever, no runny nose, and just coughing occasionally. So hopefully on the mend! Now just to get through this next snowstorm!
