L is a week shy of 6 months old. The past two days he is noticeably less interested in eating. He doesn't seem sick or irritable. He just went from sucking just about as long as I would let him to nursing for 6 minutes and unlatching to look around. Is this normal? Is it just bc he's becoming more aware of the world?
ETA He's also trying his darnedest to scratch his head and pull his hair. He's always been a scratcher, but now he's at it with both hands. Sheesh, kid!

Normal, that's about the time I had to start nursing in the bedroom or nursery.
I vote normal distraction. It's incredibly frustrating, but they do eventually get back to eating normally. You just might want to keep a prefold or burp rag near by for now so you don't spray everything when he unlatches during letdown ;-)
Yup! He's getting more distracted and interested in the world as well as getting better at transferring milk. If he gets too distracted though, he won't eat enough and will make up for it at night (yay!)
Another vote for normal. This week M hasn't been interested in nursing before I go to work. I've been all sad and "my baby is growing up too fast" about it. He still wants to nurse all night long though. M messes with his ears and head a lot too, and my mouth, he flicks my nursing tank straps, jiggles the non-nursing boob. It's all becoming pretty hilarious..like what will he do this time

That is about the time dd started the shorter feeding. Then she would go back to crazy long feedings. That went back and forth for a few more months before she settled with short feedings.

Haha yes this is my life... E is constantly trying to pull my bra straps, necklace, hair, as well as reaching for my face, scratching my chest and rubbing her eye. She also kicks and moves her legs all around. And pops off every few minutes to have a good look around and grin at me.

"Niplash" is now my favorite term. I will try to use it today IRL.
Have you started solids? I feel like distraction + interest in people food definitely impacted our nursing at this age. And now M is almost 10 months he pretty much only nurses at bedtime or right after waking/mom getting home from work.
