DIY Ladies get the hell in here!

Ok, so we have this long 6 drawer dresser that I want to move into the babies nursery. Attached is the color of the crib against the dresser. I just found something that "says" I can paint said dresser without sanding it first even though there is the laminate, as long as I use primer first. Is that real life or are they lying to me?  Everything that I have loved/picked out for the nursery has been fox or woodland related so I suppose that is our "theme". I kind of wanted to paint the dresser a cool vibrant teal to contrast with the orange of the fox. Yay or nay? AND can we talk about those knobs? Because they are pretty fucking cute. DIY ladies help this chick out. I am not sanding anything or trying to have the biggest project of my life on my hands. Is this doable?

And can you please share some of your DIY nursery projects so I feel better about even wanting to do this. Once I see how cool your shit is I MAY have the faith/motivation to do it myself. PLEASE!! <-- that is the cry of a desperate woman yo.

You can totally do it, Id do the zissner primer ( but in a super well ventilated area) or let someone else do the priming and then paint.

Or do the rustoleum cabinet transformations!

Yes, you can just paint over the primer. I would use the primer outside, or get someone else to do that part for you. Those knobs are so flipping cute.

We haven't done much in the way of things for the new baby, but we've been busy upgrading DS's room. Here he is enjoying his new toddler bed we made from ~$30 worth of lumber

I love DIY projects, but I've never done anything with furniture before so I don't have any tips there. I've always wanted to repurpose something like you're planning on doing. I can't wait to see how it turns out when you're done! I'm planning on doing a lot of DIY decorations for the nursery and playroom (with a woodland theme like yours!) though. I'm going to make a tassel garland, some paintings/prints, and decorative pillows for the nursery. And then paint a tree and some critters on the wall of the playroom.

I have done a lot of that stuff and yes you can as long as you prime it first.  I would highly recommend Kilz spray primer, works wonderfully and quicker than paint primer.  It will also make your paint lay flatter.  I never sand and haven't had a problem.

I used bullseye primer to avoid having to sand! It's totally a real thing! I've done 3 dressers and two night stands all that way. One coat of primer and one coat of paint and then touch ups. No issues!

If it were wood I would say yes primer and paint no problem. But since it's laminate I would at least do a light sanding. My cabinets are laminate and I tried primer and paint without sanding and just didn't like the finish I can't explain it but it was like super smooth and looked plasticy. I don't think you have to get intense with the sanding just rough it up a tiny bit.

I love the knobs! I am painting a similar dresser but haven't gotten started yet.

I did all my kitchen cabinets one summer and you definitely need to use primer. It's stinky stuff so make sure you can do it in a well ventilated area or have somebody else take care of that step.

one of mine was laminate, I think it just depends what you want the look of, neither of mine look super smooth though

Omg I'm a day furniture whore.

I don't like latex paint as much because even when I use a primer, it chips over time.

I'm a big advocate for "Annie Sloan chalk paint" it is expensive but it a) goes a long way, b) works and looks amazing c) all I have to do is clean the piece, no sanding, no priming.

Then I've used their wax which makes it look like legit furniture finish. But for a cheaper and quicker top coat finish, I love the aresol can of minwax polyeurathane or the paint on poly acrylic. Let me go mobile so I can post some pics!!!!

Yes you do not need to sand all the way down. I did a quick sanding with just a sanding pad- literally took me 2 minutes because it's a very light sand. Use a good primer then paint. Here is a picture of laminate dresser than i repainted.

They're from Etsy. I think they were like $24 for 6 knobs.

Thank you! It was actually a lot of fun to do- we did a big dresser and mirror too in the gray. This was actually for our master bedroom- not nursery. But if I hadn't found a changing table/dresser in white for $50 already I was going to redo a dresser from like goodwill or something.

Kinda forgot the before, but you can tell it's the oak color usually.





Then I just did this one the other week for BIL, $25 at good will, cleaned, one slapped on coat of ASCP In Paris grey, then I went over it with a pale blue, too look like a "white wash" but it matched hi bedroom walls, then I used the aerosol minwax polyeurathane (with a mask/windows open/fan)
Whole thing took me (start to finish) 4 hours, that's how fast ASCP drys, it literally dries as your painting it, the latex was a thin coat so it didn't take much longer.


And I did his old night stand to match even though it was a completely different piece than the dresser, but you can hardly tell now!

with the annie sloan do you find it holds up well with kids, that's why I didn't use it because I was concerned grubby toddler hands would ruin it

Apparently I need to read more about primer, because I sand everything before painting or staining. I have been putting off painting my nightstands solely because I don't want to sand them.

Am I the only person who looked at the pictures before reading the post and mistook the knobs for intricately decorated cakes?  Either way they are super cute!

Use a good primer and roll paint on with a small foam roller to get a smooth finish.

I also used Zissner primer on this dresser which was $30 from Goodwill and had a laminate top. It worked well. I used a water-based alkyd paint based on a DIY blog about painting furniture. It's usually used for trim and moldings and it dries harder. Good luck with your project!!

I'm impressed at the DIY skillz here! Nice job ladies! I have had the thought in mind to refinish an old Goodwill dresser in pink and orange and white for my DD's room, and I found a perfect one a couple months ago that I am kicking myself over for passing it by.

Oh and those fox knobs are the shit.

DH just told me the top of that dresser was veneer and not laminate....he got a blank stare back. But in case you all know what he's talking about and it makes a difference, I'm passing it along.

To be honest, I don't have any yet, but I have my nieces and nephews over alllllll the time ages 6weeks, 2,3,11,14&17 and I haven't had any problems. I've had more issues with the baby changer I did for my mom in latex black paint with a gold dry brush over finish because it chips away where the pad stationary strap thingy goes. As ps is Oder and fume-less, so I've been using it even when pregnant and it's safe. The Ascp wax is safe for kids to chew etc after its cured for 30 days. Poly's usually have a 24-48hour cure period. Ill see if I can find my pic of the changing table I did for my mom. (She watched my nephew 4x a week).
