With Ascp, you can use a damp rag to "rub" back to an old color, or a sand block/paper to antique, there some way to crackle but I haven't done that (that uses elders glue. I've done a smooth finish where I've sanded between coats before waxing and I've don't a brush stroke finish that looks a little more country chic. The Ascp wax, I've put it in a cup and mixed in another color paint & even a little stain, to tint it and make it distressed or aged.
I like the versatility of it but to be honest I've only tried Ascp and latex, I was so happy with Ascp I never tried the milk paint etc that are out there.
dh and I even bought a spray gun and sprayed a hand-me-down crip for this baby and when we went to out it together it was missing parts, so now we had to buy a new crib. But we're painting her a dresser, night stand and changing table. I'm excited!
oh oh, for veneers or laminate, if you want the dark stained top "look", since you can't really sand and stain, I've done general finished Java gel stain. It really goes on more like a paint, but I didn't fill the "wood texture" of our cabinets. So to me that was the only way I could get those particular cabinets to "look" stained.
