Props to these Marines. Surprisingly, the Corps, known for extreme sexism and over the top masculinity, are at the forefront of gender neutrality for ground troops. I heard of their program awhile back. They were reassessing fitness standards and were considering making changes to requirements to make them actually be in line with what is required of Marines down range. Which is why "Carl" played a huge role in training. Serious, why do you need to do 3, 5, or 12 pull ups? So, now Carl ensures a Marine can save a person in full gear and climbing over a 10 foot wall with your ruck is a better predictor of in the field readiness than a pull up. And damn, it's come to light that part of what kept women out of these roles was insufficient upper body strength to complete the requisite number of pull-ups (which means jack), but when it comes to what is actually needed in combat situations, the wash out rate for women is not too dissimilar to that of men.
There is still a long way to go, but things may be trending the right direction.
