2.0 is going to be sleeping in the PNP in our room until we move out of our current place, about 6 months (unless we get lucky and find something sooner). I'm wondering if we need to get a mattress for the PNP or if it should be OK without. Also, our PNP is shaped funny, it's kind of rounded instead of being a perfect rectangle, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to find a mattress that fits it properly.

We just used the PnP as it was for LO. My only concession in that respect was the waterproof liner I bought for it was quilted a bit, so it provided a little extra cushioning.
Unless I could get a mattress made for the PnP, I'd be too nervous to use it.

This. They make some thick quilted sheets, or mattress pads that make the PNP more comfy, that's what we did, too.
