I have this recorded to watch later. I hate wasting food but it happens sometimes, normally celery. I find some good deals on 50% off meat when it is about to expire. I have to go through my fridge and pantry every couple weeks to remember what I have to use up.
I've definitely been trying to get better about this. I'm pretty good about sticking to my meals plans and not buying things I know we won't eat. I'm also a little lax on expiration dates, but it can be a mind game if you think something might be bad, then you start to think it smells bad. H hates eating leftovers. I usually eat them for lunch. But I try to keep our meal sizes down. And all I have to say about the part about the bill not passing is I'm not surprised and I hope this brings more attention to this issue.
This was my favorite “Food waste is like the band Rascal Flatts: It can fill a surprising number of stadiums even though most people consider it complete garbage.”
Great video! I waste more than I'd like but the amount of commercial waste is jaw dropping. i've also heard people from restaurants say that they will be sued if they donate food. That makes me so sad.

I watched the show last night and realized I probably wouldn't take the last piece of chard or a different looking peach. I'm going to try to be more open minded with my produce.
I grabbed strawberries, cheese, baby carrots and turkey slices for lunch because I was worried about wasting them. It's been nice to graze today.
I worked at a small little boutiquey grocery store during college and the waste even for that little place was staggering. The employees tried very hard to donate some of the food but not only are grocery stores resistant but there aren't very many charities willing to pick up food from grocery stores either. Many food banks deal primarily with nonperishables, so they didn't want things like the day old bread and pastries we were throwing out everyday. They simply didn't have the resources to deal with it.
Now I donate to a program here in the GTA called Second Harvest that literally goes around to different businesses to "rescue" food and distribute it out to hot meal programs, various at-risk centres and food banks. It's kind of like the needed middle man to connect retailers with charities. I think it's a great program.
A grocery store chain here in Canada has also started a program of selling ugly fruits and vegetables for 30% off. It's a pilot program starting with apples and potatoes but it will be interesting to see how that goes.

I'm going to need a picture of a pretty and ugly potato.
Ha! I think with a potato it's more about being "undersized" but there's a glamour shot here.
