(Okay, so I'm going to type this out on my desktop and add pictures on Tapatalk.)
(If you want me to do a tutorial on how I dyed my other sling, let me know.)
Ingredients:
- a pair of large aluminum rings from slingrings.com
- heavyweight fabric (100% cotton or 100% linen is perfect) at least 30 inches wide, and at least 2 yards long.
- sewing machine
- thread (preferably ploy thread as it's stronger than cotton)
- seam ripper
- scissors
- pins
- heavy duty needle for your machine
Here is the video of the pleating I 'followed'
Prewash your fabric & iron smooth (I did not do this, but you really should.)
Since my fabric was 45 inches wide, I trimmed it down to 30 inches wide, but kept all the length.
Hem 3 sides, the 2 long sides and 1 short side, with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Once you have it all hemmed, lay the short raw end to one side with the excess to your right (or left, whichever is more comfortable for you).
Fold the hemmed edge up about 1 inch.
Then pinch & fold it under (this is also explained in the video). Pin in place.
Place one pin at the top edge and one about 5-6 inches down.
Now you are going to make your first pleat. Pinch about an inch or so away from your first fold & pull it towards you until it is slightly overlapping that first fold. Pin the pleat in the same spots as the first fold.
Keep going until you reach the other side of the fabric. (I'm really just following the video here)
When you are done pleating, you will baste stitch the pleats so you can remove the pins. Set your stitch length on the longest setting you have and sew where your top pins are placed ( I don't recommend sewing over your pins, so please remove them as you go).
Do that for both the top & bottom set of pins.
After that, you will cut across the top of your pleats (right next to the basting you just did), leaving about 1/4 of fabric. (Where the black line is)
Take your rings and thread the fabric through BOTH rings, and line up the raw edge of your fabric with the second basting line (pin in place if needed).
Using a zig zag stitch, sew over the raw edge to secure it. (sorry for my jacked up pleats)
You'll need to add 2 more rows of zig zag stitching above that first row. 3 rows total of zig zag stitches.
Trim your extra threads & you're done!
