I apologize I tend to be long winded and detailed, I also apologize if this was brought up over and over again on TB, but since I figured you are trying to lose noon status it wouldn't hurt to ask again....
So the first night we brought my son home and put him in the crib, he was tiny peanut who kicked so much I swore he would flip himself over and suffocate (FTM neurotics at play). so we bought a co-sleeper bassinet thing to keep in his crib (cheaper than a regular bassinet for thw crib). it had mesh siding so if he push himself against it he was fine.
Last night we put him in the crib with out the bassinet and with out swaddle. I had read that at this age, it is a great way to help him build his muscles for crawling. Last night and again this morning we woke to a wailing baby who had squirmed to the side of crib and gotten his little arm through the bars.
We had originally registered and received a mesh bumper for the crib, but the lady who taught our birthday class told us it was unsafe. I had someone else tell me when my kid wakes screaming in the middle of the night cause an arm or leg is stuck, I'll wish I had it. She was right, I do wish I had it.
I just bought one yesterday to keep tiny arms and and legs in the crib. But... I'm also the one who had plush bumpers on the crib because M thrashes like a shark and I didn't want him to knock himself unconscious on the crib slats.
Now I'm at a place that says unconscious isn't dead. And after his shenanigans ladt night - unconscious might not be that bad... MOTY?
I would try a breathable bumper if he is getting arms stuck. The thick plush ones are a suffocation risk and then can be used to climb on. We haven't used anything for either kid but our guys haven't gotten limbs stuck.
I'm still swaddling, so I haven't thought a lot about it. We do have the mesh bumpers, and if she gets stuck, they are going in. Even swaddled, she spins herself around.
I just realized, I didn't actually answer your question. I like them. I have more concern about injury from a limb getting stuck than the mesh bumper creating a suffocation risk, but I know that is a UO.

Thanks everyone. I'm still torn. I talked to DH and he doesn't think we should use them. I'm going to try without again tonight. We'll see how he does, if he is still getting stuck i'll pick them up on my way home tomorrow (pending snow storm).
We used them with DS1 when he was a little older, probably closer to a year. We swaddled him for a long time though. I think they're probably okay. You just need to decide what you're more comfortable with - the bumpers or him getting stuck.

Ds1 would get his legs stuck all the time. Both my friend and I bought the mesh bumpers and they didn't fit securely on our cribs (we had the same crib). I think it depends on the crib if it fits properly.
There are also individual slat bumpers. They cover each slat and have a small amount of space between them. I don't know any safety info on them and the ones I've seen are a couple hundred dollars.
We haven't started using them yet but we have mesh bumpers and do plan to use them eventually. There's been no point so far as DD hardly moves in her sleep without waking herself up. Once she gets a bit more wiggly we'll put them in, probably closer to 5 or 6 months. I figure it'll be safer by then anyway.

I purchased a mesh bumper for DS2, but he's currently in a cradle that hubs' great grandpa built. Once we put together his crib, I'll be using the bumper.
