We are looking into helmet therapy to fix it. (Brachy is when the whole back of the head is flat, growing wide rather than round and no that doesn't mean she was on her back all the time and I'm a bad mom, someone actually told me that) there is suppose to be atleast a 20% difference between the length and the width of the head, Lilly's is only 1.8% difference. The length of her head is 13.6" and the width is 13.3" and the cephalic index or cranial index is 97.79 mm which throws her into the very high end of moderate and low end of severe. We have also found out that our insurance doesn't cover cranial remolding helmets, so yeah, couple thousand out of my pocket.. Next step is just finding the proper neuro to treat Lilly and get her the help she needs. Please send all thoughts and prayers our way if you could! Thanks girls!
E also has a flat back of the head but our pedi doesn't want a helmet. I've been nervous about that! Did your pedi diagnose her or did you have to go to a specialist? Forgive me but I don't remember how old she is. Do you mind sharing again? I will def keep you and little miss in my T&P! I know this has got to be stressful but you are a great mom and are doing what is best for her! E got his flat spot cause he was so colicky and was only happy in the swing. We did lay him down a good bit but we did what made him happy and I can't say I would do any different. I've had so much guilt over it!! It's nice to know I'm not alone but I hate you are going through this at the same time!! *hugs*
docamy Lilly's doctor sent her to a pedi plastic surgeon and he didn't do anything, no measurements no scans, nothing! We got a second opinion at a helmet specialist and he did all the measurements and scans and all her measurements shows moderate-severe brachy. We currently looking for a new neurosurgeon to go through to get her a helmet. Lilly is 6 months and thank you for your encouragement

Your welcome!! I'm here if you ever want to talk or vent! E is 10 months and I have seen improvement. Right now we are not pursuing a helmet and trusting our pedi but like I said I'm a little nervous about it. She says she has seen worse than E improve with nothing but time. He probably will have a flat spot in the future though. Anyway good luck and please keep me posted!!
Aww I'm sorry. I hope the helmet helps. And of course it doesn't make you a bad mom! What an idiot to say that. But why on earth doesn't insurance cover it?? So lame!
Tate wore a helmet/ Doc band for 4 weeks when he was 5 months. He would lie on his face and cry during tummy time, plus mild tort which resulted in him favoring one side when he slept. The Pedi said he was in the severe category of flattening on the back. His head was growing rapidly as well, which is why he grew out of the helmet so quickly, and needed head scans.
I worked on home stretching of his neck and tummy time more diligently after we were given his treatment plan. I was reluctant, and hoped it would resolve on it's own, but DH really wanted to move forward with the helmet. We would return to the facility to have measurements done, and the inside of the helmet would be shaved to allow certain areas to fill in. We were told he would not even know he had it on, and many kids in the waiting room seemed oblivious. Tate hated it, and did not sleep for a month. As you can see in your LO thread, his noggin is perfect! Good luck, and feel free to ask away!

No one thinks you are a bad mom. I really think all babies nowadays have some variation of a flat head. My older son had plagiocephaly and torticollis and we narrowly avoided a helmet. He is almost 4 and still has a flat spot that is noticeable to me but not really to others. I almost wish we had gotten a helmet, but it seemed too daunting of a cost. I'm sorry you have to pay for that out of pocket, it makes no sense to me why things like that aren't covered!

My DS had plagiocephaly and torticollis. In no way does this make you a bad mom. We didn't need a helmet (mild case), but it was close. Like ksyknelvr73, I kind of wish we'd done it (DS is 3 now).
This will be over before you know it, although I know it doesn't seem like that now, and it will be SO worth it. Hugs, Momma!
