i didn't CD DD out the gate, but she was in OS by 5 weeks (she was a big babe). I'm due with 2.0 in May and I would like to CD from the beginning so I'm trying to figure out a newborn stash. So far I have: 10 NB Simplex's 9 lil Joeys 9 NB GMD fitted's with snaps 2 size 1 thirsties covers (I know I need to get NB sized covers) A million wipes, wet bags, etc left over from DD
I want to build up to 40 NB dipes. What do I do for my remaining 12? I'm thinking fitteds, but I want to go with one that might last longer than the NB GMD, ideally until 2.0 could fit in to a OS (I was looking at Sbish Minis, but they are pricey). I'm not opposed to more simplex's and I was thinking of grabbing a couple of the new NB Thirsties.
I like prefold and workhorses for the early days. I found the simplex didn't fit until about week 2. My boys were on the smaller end at 7lbs when we left the hospital, so maybe someone else with bigger babies can weigh in on fit right away. lil joeys are nice for the first week of 2 but that's all they lasted for me. This time I added a couple nickis newborn bamboo aios to try, so we will see how they do. From the looks of sizing they should fit right away since they are pretty close to the size of the lil joeys.
What about flats? They will last a really long time and give you a very custom fit. I promise with a little practice they aren't as hard to use as they look like they'd be.
I agree with mrslka that the simplex may not fit right away and the lil' Joeys will probably be outgrown fairly quickly.
Workhorses without snaps will last longer than workhorses with snaps. You can use a snappi to get a custom fit. Otherwise Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds get a lot of love. I'm not sure that they will last any longer than NB workhorses though, and they are more expensive.
As far as covers, your thirsties size 1 might fit a NB. Or they might not. Since you want things to last until OS fit, I'd suggest a cover that can adjust like Blueberry Mini Coveralls. I think the Rumparooz NB covers adjust as well. And Sweet Pea NB, although those may not make it to OS.
I would also recommend a dozen flats, simply because they are useful for everything for so long. I would also recommend Kawaii P&N. They're a nb pocket that will fit well into OS sizes. For more covers I give a big thumbs up to the RaR NB. They fit very small (my LO didn't fit the Thirsties Duo 1 at birth), but they fit for a long time. M could still wear them at 7 months and over 15 lbs.
Okay, so I've been convinced to try prefolds and covers. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and I think I can handle it. Is there a brand of prefolds that if recommended for the newborn stage. I looked at GMD and it looked like I would need a few sizes to get me to the OS stage. I also looked at Osocozy. Any recommendations? Also, which fold is best for a NB boy? I liked the trifold but wasn't sure if that would work for a newborn.

I really love GMD prefolds but they do have lots of sizes. The beauty of that is they always fit well. The downside is price. You could technically skip NB size and use smalls right away. That would be similar to using Osocozy size 1s. They'd be bulky but if that doesn't bother you it won't hurt baby
As far as folds, jelly roll or newspaper with jelly rolled sides is the way to go witjh a NB. Trifold is easier, but it won't contain NB poo. You'll end up changing covers with every poop.

Thread hijacking - sorry op. Anyone have a good site for picture tutorials of folds? I've been looking and coming up with nothing. I don't have the capability to watch videos with our internet connection. (old school here way our in the middle of nowhere)
