Baby clothing gripe/ask for advice (X-posted)

Our baby is 5 weeks old and weighs 9.5 lb (I'm pretty sure 6lb of it is in her cheeks!). We are just starting to transition out of newborn outfits, though the baby grew out of footed sleepers at about 2 weeks because of length (particularly in the legs). Mostly since then we have been doing separates because all of the 0-3 mo stuff is so massive on her still. Any tips on what to do until she can fill out the 0-3 mo stuff? Just do separates, or are there brands you know of that run long in the legs? Or just do sleepers with no feet? Thanks in advance!

Hi. Im a huge fan of seperates for this very reason and prefer them to one pieces. There is a thread on the May 15 board about tall babies so maybe you can check that out as well.

I have this same issue. We just haven't been doing footed sleepers. Separates, onesies, and rompers are your friend. Rompers are my favorite because they have a little more coverage than onesies, but no feet to worry about.

If all else fails, Gerber tends to run small.

I second the Hanna Andersson footless sleepers. The torsos are longer, too. Carters Just One You (Target) are shorter/smaller than regular Carter's so we always outgrew those much faster. I agree w/ billyhorrible that Gerber is ridiculously small.

Same problem. She doesn't fit into newborn but too small for most 3 months. Gerber works well for us BC they run small.

Fluffy cloth diaper butts fill out the baggy clothes! (which is why we're in 3-6 mo stuff.)

1. Different brands have completely different sizing. What brands are you talking?
2. Children's Place does a fair few footless sleepers
3. Gowns are widely available until about the 6 month size
4. Mix it up. My daughter fits 0-3 month dresses, 3-6 month onesies (due to cloth diapers), and 6-9 month sleepers. Some of the 3-6 month sleepers are way bigger than the 6-9 month brands I can usually find.
5. Once Upon a Child/second-hand are your friend, at least until she hits the 12-18 month size. DS has been in 3T since last Autumn and will have his second year in those winter clothes.

I've found carters runs the longest. We are currently in 3 month carters. Not 0-3 but 3. Some of the clothes are 3-6.
Try footless PJs too. So you don't have to worry as much about the length

Gowns have become a life saver for us at the in between sizes stage. He is just now wearing some 3mo at 4wk but the footed ones are already almost too short - he's on the long side in that department. I do agree that Carter's terry ones do seem a good bit longer though.

I experienced with ds1 (long torso, 100th %tile for height), and now 1mo old DS2 is starting to move into some 3-6mo clothes... the sleepers alw go first.

gap and gymboree were the most generously sized clothing. Carters is next (from the carter's store). Just One You (Carters for Target) Children's Place, Circo and Old Navy follow,and gerber was the smallest of all of them.


First impressions (Macy's brand) is stupid wide for the length they are. I'd avoid them altogether.


Also, the sizing stays pretty odd ball. DS1 can fit into 3T shorts and bathing suits, but needs 5T and 6 pants for the leg length. He's 4 now.

Thanks all for the tips, you've all been super helpful!

We love rompers and dresses for daytime, and newborn onesies still fit just fine. We've tried several brands--Gerber ran short and wide for us, Just One You was good in the width but quickly too short. The Carters terry sleepers lasted the longest! I am not sure why they are longer than the cotton ones, but I am keeping that in mind for when we have to buy sleepers next. We still have two footless sleepers we are using from Just One You + Burt's Bees. I guess we will probably just do separates until she grows into the 0-3 months stuff.
