Hi CD peeps -- I lurk a bit and hope these aren't repetitive questions but here goes.
I am expecting LO #2 in June, I own about 24 pockets (mostly Kawaii and a few Alva) that we used with DS. I pretty much hated the MF inserts and want to do something different this time.
1. What is my most absorbent option to replace MF inserts? I'm leaning towards prefolds or flats. Or should I do something else?
2. I know GMD prefolds get all the love around here... But would Osocozy be a decent option? Would one brand be more absorbent than the other? I am on a budget.
3. I know I can't use the pockets until LO is at least 10 pounds. Would it be more economical to do disposables for a few months or should I consider newborn covers since I'll have the prefolds? I admit I'm a little lazy but I use cloth to save money... FWIW DS1 was a pretty chunky baby, born 8-6 and grew quickly.
We use osocozy flats in our pockets and they are absorbent enough. I was also able to fold them down and use them under newborn covers on my 6.5 pound baby. So, I would definitely recommend a pack of flats and some newborn covers for pocket stuffing bow and newborn in the future.
If you already have prefolds, just get some covers. If you're going cheap, I love my assunta tiny covers. I think free shipping starts at $40 now, and you can get enough covers to get you through the Nb days. I have G in red edge GMDs, but if i trifold a yellow edge,I can still get him in the tiny covers at over 4MO. How long will $40 of disposables last?
If you want one size of diaper for nb plus stuffing later, I would recommend flats over prefolds. However, that said, my GMD yellows (size small) fit very early on (folded down) and at 8 months, she still uses them daily. Osocozy are considered similar quality to GMD, I just don't know their sizing. I just think that flats would be a little more customizable.

We have Osocozy unbleached prefolds and really like them. DD is 4 months old, almost 12lbs and still in size 1. I don't have any GMDs to compare them to, but the Osocozy brand has worked extremely well for us. We used them from the time DD was 3 days old with sweet pea NB covers and we just recently switched to a combination of OS sweet pea covers and blueberry coveralls. We actually already purchased the size 2s osocozy prefolds and have them prepped because we like them so much.
I know a couple people that started with GMD smalls on their newborns, they had 8+ pound babies. They were slightly bulky at first but not anymore then the ozocozy prefolds. For covers you could check out assents cover (they are like around here but I haven't used them) or imagine newborn covers, they are both budget friendly options. I also have used the nickis pull on covers for newborns and thought they were decent, it I prefer snaps or Velcro cover so not my first choice.
So 3 dozen GMD small prefolds plus 6 imagine covers is about $140. That's about a month and a half of disposables.
We use osocozy better fit for both of our girls. We were able to use the newborn on dd2 until she was about 3 months, and then we went to the premium size (red edge), and she's 21 months now. We were using them on dd1 until she was almost 3.
