Good luck (to you & YH) mainewifey I have a friend who got a generator after losing their power for days. Her husband didn't put their stove or microwave on the generator. But did put his kegerator on there. The man has priorities.
At first I was really excited...this will be my first real blizzard! But I'll admit I'm starting to get nervous. I'm planning to check in on our elderly neighbors today and make sure they've got everything they need. Then I'm heading out to get a few more candles in case we go days without power. (Please, God, no. I can do A day without power, but I don't know if I could do dayS.)
Ladies, correct me if I'm wrong, but my gas stove will continue to work, right? I'll just have to manually light it?
DayS isn't too awful without power. Just use every single blanket in your house and get under it with hubs and the dog. Which is basically how we lived when we lost power for 2 weeks from Sandy in 2012..
Get a generator! At the least you can power a small portable heater and your fridge. We have a wood stove but our chimney needs to be repaired so no wood burning for us
I'm mostly worried about keeping two kids entertained for days stuck inside without power. Planning to buy a puzzle and some craft supplies just in case. I would get a generator, but we live in a small apartment with no storage space, so I have no idea where we'd put it when we weren't using it.

The gas stove will work, but yes, you'll have to light the burners.
I want a generator for the freaking well pump. We have heating, cooking, and entertainment all under control with out one. But I can not stand having to flush the toilet with a bucket of melted snow.
I'm in the totally fucked area. I'm hoping they let us stay home tomorrow but management is on a conference call and it's not sounding good...
I am also in the totally fucked area. I'm pretty sure they are going to shut down the state so you won't have to work tomorrow regardless. Unless of course you are an essential worker.
I'm thankful I can work from home easily. I won't be leaving the house tomorrow, and possibly Wednesday depending on when the snow stops and how long it takes to clean up!!

For such a small state I'm surprised at the amount of active people on GKU that are from CT. It's a small world yo.

What about making snow ice cream?
Eek. No generators inside. I feel your small apt. pain.

All this snow is ensuring that I'm missing ALL my half marathon training.
Fuuuuuuuuck.
I've never done a marathon....but do you have a treadmill and would that suffice? If you don't have one, feel free to snowmobile to my house and use mine. Lord knows I don't lol
I'm a delicate snowflake who can only run outside.
Haha.
In truth, my body isn't stellar at regulating its temperature. I get overheated easily so I only run during the winter and only outside in temps below 60 degrees.
If we could put my treadmill in a cold room (~ 32 degrees, basically a big walk in fridge), I'd happily run inside.

I believe my basement fits in those parameters! lol
I guess I'll be able to flush the toilet no matter what, and he gets to live another day!
We lived on the 7th floor of a mid-rise apartment building for five years. When Hurricane Irene came through, we lost power for part of a day and learned - in the most unspectacular fashion - that the pumps to bring water up to the 7th floor do not run when the power is out. When Hurricane Sandy came next, I filled every vessel in our apartment with water. Flushing the toilet is basically essential to my peace of mind. My husband thought my stockpile of water was ridiculous, but shut it, Jay.
Now that we've moved, we have no such problems with our city water supply. Thank goodness. It would seriously stress me out!
He bought the last generator at Home Depot. He filled it, the ATVs and the snowmobile with gas, and he bought a new snow shovel.

We're on a well so we have a generator that will at least keep us with heat and running water/flushing toilets. I can't imagine not being able to flush. Ick.
Sounds like the governor is giving another briefing at 5:02PM, so I'm betting that state buildings are going to be open for a regular day today. I'm hoping they prove me wrong though!
I have heard that roads are closed starting 9pm tonight, I doubt the state will be open tomorrow. FX. My boss was on his way to Greenwich for an appointment and said he saw a huge line of utility trucks going north, at least they are getting ready!

We have a well as well, and I asked H to stockpile some water specifically for flushing. I don't even care about cooking, just flushing lol
We were in our apartment still during that October storm. Thankfully it was on city water & sewers so we could still flush while we were without power for a week. Really, I would go stay at someone else's house with flushing toilets before I'd stay in my own house without them. But we should never have to worry about that with the generator.
Cooking - we just buy extra propane and things that can be cooked on the grill. Pretty easy to heat up soups and stuff in a pan on the grill. Whenever we renovate the house we plan to put a gas stove in so we will always have a running stove.

We had to melt snow with the wood stove in a 5 gallon bucket, and dump that in the toilet to flush it.
H got one thats big enough to run quite a bit. The fridge, well pump, the furnace/hot water heater, and probably most of the interior lights.
We're further north, so it's going to be colder, but we're only suppose to get 12-16", not starting 'til later tonight. I'm guessing they'll have it mostly cleaned-up by mid-day wednesday. That said I did make a run to the store for some baisics and beer, the thermostat is up slightly higher than it usually is, and mobile devices are charging.

MH and I were just talking this morning that we need to upgrade to a larger one.

I was just at Walmart getting stuff for sewing, knitting and crocheting so I don't go insane these next few days. While I was waiting for my fabric to be cut I got an associate came over and told the cutting lady that they just got a call from the mayor (I assume of our tiny town) saying they were going to probaby shut down Walmart in the next hour or so. All I can say is that this shit is no joke seeing that the Walmart is the only major place our town has. lol

That makes like 6 CT people? That's pretty freaking awesome.
mistabinx yeah I used to work for a cell phone company that had a kiosk in the Waterbury BJs. The BJs is considered a center of emergency and HAS to stay open regardless. I'm pretty sure the Walmart is the equivalent in my town. This is why I'm taking this storm seriously. Oh and it just started snowing steadily.
