Mine started as lower back pain and then really bad back pain then contractions. I lost my mucus plug about 4 days before. I'm paranoid now that I'm leaking fluid but I don't know. How do you know? Is it a big deal to wait and see how it is tomorrow?
I was told if I thought I was leaking to go to l&d immediately.
Well, I had a doctor's appointment the morning before I went into labour. They had an option to check the cervix and do the membrane sweep thing once you are full term. I was 39.5 weeks and I said okay. The nurse said I was 1cm and she stretched me to two and that she could feel my uterus contracting (I wasn't feeling anything). So my first sign was that the nurse at my OB office said I was probably having the baby in the next couple days.
Later that day, I had to go to the bathroom a lot - sorta loose bowels. I later lost the mucous plug. I had mild cramping - like period cramps. So I didn't think that meant I was having a baby that day...just that my body was getting ready. Then they got a little stronger and my water broke so we went to the hospital. So it wasn't until my water broke that I really knew I was in active labour. I had a baby 4 hours later!
So I'm still at home. My contractions were far apart at the beginning and then around 2:30 they were regular it 7-8 minutes apart. That kept up until about 7:00. Now they seem a little more irregular. Painful still. I guess I will wait to call the doctor until they get a little closer together. We only live about ten minutes from the hospital. I also had diarrhea last night and lost my plug this morning. I hope this isn't false labor.

I had mild cramping for weeks and complete and utter discomfort the day before - like barely walking. People stopped me on the street sort of thing to check on me literally. But I knew when real contractions started. I asked the same question and honestly - you'll know. They hurt like a mother. I knew the difference between the two. I guess I'd say my system cleared itself out - but that happens on the reg for me anyways mostly daily so it isn't really a sign per se and no bloody show or water breaking otherwise.
I will say the reason I questioned the contractions was that honestly, they weren't really bad for me at all. I could talk through them, etc. They were honestly very uncomfortable, but not to the point where I was utterly in pain. It was only when the doctor broke my water that my contractions went to a pain level of about 20 (on a scale of 1-10) and I couldn't even breath when I had a contraction. Apparently I had so much fluid that it provided a ton of cushion during my contractions.
