She is 2 weeks old and has had 3 baths, an herbal bath at the birth center a couple hours after birth and 2 at home. She is a spitter so she gets pretty stinky with a sour milk smell.
I sponge bathed her until last week (she is 3.5 weeks now). She has had a couple submersion baths now and loves them. I started one night when she was losing her mind and it seemed to calm her down. Because she has a ton of hair I wash that every other day, or every third day just by holding her under the kitchen faucet. The nurse said it could help prevent cradle cap. Dd#1 had terrible cradle cap and it lasted forever, so if hair washing frequently can help, I am in.
I cannot get J to sleep in his bassinet. I try to swaddle him but he seems to be fighting out of it and rolling around. I don't want him to only sleep in the swing or RNP, but I'm not sure what to do. Should I try just putting him in a sleep n play outfit instead of swaddle him? Do I have to swaddle him? At the hospital, he seemed to like it and he likes it when he's in my arms, but once I lay him down on a flat surface all hell breaks loose!
Maybe try a sleep sack? It lets them move some, but is still warm and kinda keeps them all wrapped close.
I use the velcro swadle, but it also seems to ride up, so I pull the velcro side down at an angle and velcro both tabs down by her hip and that seems to prevent it riding up.

Personally, I would stick with the swaddle, but try the swing or RNP. Babies are used to movement, they have been moving around their whole lives. Your LO is too young to be creating bad habits. There's no such thing as spoiling a newborn.
Stupid newb question: I put J in the bassinet once he was out cold and he immediately rolled to his side. He is sleeping great in that position but I read he shouldn't be on his side. Should I try to roll him over? Is there something I should do make him stay in his back? Is he okay on his side? I feel so incredibly stupid.
Curious about this also. E immediately rolls to her side every time I put her on her back. I have read that it's ok if they turn on their own & that you should straighten out the arm that's underneath to prevent rolling onto tummy.

We let DS sleep on his side when we are awake and around. The Dr even suggested we should encourage side sleeping while we are up, alternating sides to avoid flat head. Otherwise we put him on his back.
DD was a stomach sleeper and we fought it until she could roll and then just let it happen.
For those of you who use bottles, how often do you boil the parts? We use dr browns and the blue tube and white connector make me nervous because they are hard to clean.
Honestly I bought some of those quick sterilizer bags for breastfeeding and used those initially, then realized my dishwasher had a sterilize feature so did that. Just a heads up-- don't wash bottles when you have spaghetti for dinner. All my nipples turned red. Oops.
@kateyoung, I tried one of those too but it seemed too big and was riding up over his mouth. Maybe it wasn't tight enough, I will try again!
Pulling the flaps at a slight downward angle helped us. Amelia has been using those since she was not even 6 pounds, so it's just a matter of getting it arranged right. I bet you could you tube it for demonstrations.

E does too. The pediatrician put him on the table on his back and he rolled right to his side. Ped said not to worry about it, as they rarely are strong enough at this point to go all the way to their stomachs. I panicked about it at first. I have unreasonable sids anxiety.

Liam is producing plenty of poopy diapers, but I haven't noticed many just wet diapers. I'm starting to get concerned. He's going into day 4, is breastfed, and circumcised. His stools are currently yellow & seedy, and he has 3-4 dirty diapers a day, but he hasn't had any diapers that are just wet. He doesn't seem as concerned about it as I do--he seems normal and content. He breastfeeds for about 12 minutes at a time, every 2-3 hours, for about 10 times a day. He isn't fussy and he wakes up during feedings. He's generally asleep if he's not eating or pooping. We had our first checkup today, and the ped said everything looked fine (but I hadn't thought to bring up the lack of wet diapers issue at the time).
baby's had three baths at home now. Two because he really needed it because of all the vomit and one because he was hysterical and it was the only thing that calmed him down. He loves baths! He falls asleep during them!

I would bring it up to the ped. But sometimes it's hard to tell if you missed a wet with all the stool.

You could always use the Pampers Swaddlers Sensative with the yellow stripe on the front that turns blue when it's wet.

We had this in the hospital. The pedi said once he had passed all the meconium, all of his poops would be really wet since he is EBF. So not to worry about it once he had peed 1time after his circ.
I made a Peds appt. for Jack on Monday, all this straining and grunting and fussiness while he sleeps us getting to be all the time. He's not constipated, so maybe reflux? Poor guy.
Similar over here. The grunting and spitting up to her throat and choking. I called our pedi office today and they think it'll pass but I'll call again if it worseens or continues
Any updates hopefulreturn? My LO was born on Friday morning and she keeps gagging and trying to get stuff out of her system. I called the on call doc last night because it got scary; was really having a hard time and spit up out of her mouth and nose. She said it is normal and can last 3-4 days after birth. I sure hope it goes away soon!
elizabethnevadap, that's actually what we use. I think it's only turned blue twice that I recall.
Is your milk in all the way? It took a few days after my milk came for him to start having large pees. He was probably 6 days old when they started and now at 3 weeks he pees multiple times a day.

Thanks everyone! His poops have been on the wet side, so I think he has been urinating. And the gauze/goo for his circ was probably getting in the way. My milk just came in today, so we'll see how it goes.
What do you guys recommend for diaper rash? Poor babe has a rash on his bum ): I've been using A&D, but do you guys recommend anything better?
We struggled with diaper rash pretty much from the time we took her home from the hospital. We were using Burt's bees diaper cream and really weren't seeing any change. We switched to cloth wipes with a coconut oil solution and it was almost instantaneous change. I highly recommend cloth wipes if you notice irritation. I don't know what took us so long to try them...but I will not use disposables again!
Do you use disposable or cloth diapers ? What is your coconut oil solution PLS we are struggling w a diaper rash That doesn't seem to go away - we use disposable diapers

I'm making my own solution. 1 cup distilled water, 1 T baby wash, 1T coconut oil. I spray on and wipe off with a cloth rag. Follow up with corn starch.

We experienced that the first few days. Our girl came out fast so they think she didn't have time to clear out all the mucus and stuff. This newer reflux reaction kicked in at about 2+ weeks.

Any babies with eye gunk? It kicked up two days ago and I've been assuming it's a clogged tear duct. Today it's a bit more red on the outer side of her eye. Is this worth a doctor call?

Yup! When we first noticed it we called the pediatrician and they basically said not to worry about it. But then it got worse and thicker. My sister suggested we put breast milk in her eye; we did once, and the next day all gunk was gone.
ETA: I just re-read and saw that you said it's red by her eye. That's one thing the doctor asked about, so if I were you I'd give them a call. Nothing to lose by asking. But also put milk on it.
Here's my problem for the day (it's always something)(apparently God thinks I'm too much of a control freak and need to work on that):
The number one thing all the pediatricians have been saying to me is to stay away from sick people during the first 6 weeks. So of course my 2 yr old DD wakes up with a cold this morning. Any advice?
Thank goodness I'm nursing so she's getting some antibodies through the breast milk. That's the only thing keeping me sane right now.
I thought it was crazy but when DD was in the hospital at 4.5 mos the nurse suggested we put vaporub on the bottoms of her feet. I was shocked how well it worked.
