I live in Eastern Virginia, right outside of a very small industrial town (paper mill) and in the outskirts of a farming county. My husbands grandparents built the house in the 1940's. We purchased it in 2008 when his grandma could no longer live alone and had to go into longterm care. The house itself is about 2500 heated sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bath rooms, full finished basement, and sits on a large lot. We can see the river from our backyard too, so that's a bonus
I love the area we are in, it's very quiet out here and we're only about 30 minutes from two rather large cities. Cost of living seems to be cheaper, though traveling to get to decent restaurants, shops, stores can be a pain in the butt at times.
West coast of FLORIDA, loooove it! Close to family. Rent a house on beach now, but hoping to buy soon (won't be on beach). We have been here for a few years. DH & I were both and raised on this coast of FL so it's familiar and tons to do. my only complaint would be he houses are so damn expensive because of water proximity (increased proprty taxes) and flood/home insurance crap. Renting is only affordable because our landlord lives out of state and has no clue she could get double the rent from somebody else. We got way lucky!
I love the west coast of Florida!! I'm from the Tampa Bay area originally. That's great about renting on the beach. The flood insurance thing is hurting a lot of people down there. I still have most of my family there so we visit quite a bit.

I live in East TN in a small town outside of Knoxville, and by small town I mean one flashing caution light kind of town. I love it! This is DH's hometown and we moved here back in June. We live about 2 mins from my in-laws, which is great. They are probably the best in-laws one could ever ask for. I got very lucky. I grew up about 2hrs east of here so it's still close enough to visit on the weekends.
We're currently "renting" a house owned by a family friend. We are actually remodeling the house for them in exchange for rent. So far we have built up a year and a half worth of rent for the labor we have put in and we still have a ton to do outside the house. The house was built back in the 40s and is a 3bed/1bath house with a rather large yard. It's perfect for us right now. I doubt we will move again until we are able to purchase our own home.

I live in Ohio, about halfway between two of the bigger cities. We live in a suburb and the thing I love the most is that we live on a super quiet cul de sac. It will be great when DD gets older and wants to ride her bike and stuff.
I'm not a fan of the weather though, winter is just not my thing but all of our family is right down the road so I don't see us going anywhere.

Upstate NY, right on Lake Ontario. It's a beautiful area but there's not a ton to do. We own a 1400 sq ft home that we like but don't love. We plan to move in a few years to a house with more land.
We live in a college town in eastern WA. It's not too bad. DH and I moved here to start college 3.5 years ago when we were still just dating. Our plan is to stay here in order for DH to complete his PhD program. He just started it in August, so he estimates that it will take at least 4 or 5 more years to complete. We plan to move once he finishes, but where to depends all on the job offers he receives. We would like to stay in this region because our families live relatively close by.
We currently live in a 1200 sq. ft. townhouse that is part of the university's family/ grad student housing. It's pretty nice for now, but it will be great to buy our own home someday. We plan to live here until DH graduates.
I'm a little gun shy about giving my specific location, but I live out in the sticks. We own and have about 1500 sq ft. I wish we had a fourth bedroom, but other than that I'm happy with our house. I like that we can't see our neighbors and that we have plenty of privacy. It's peaceful here. LO will have plenty of space to play outside. I love/hate that town is about 25 minutes away. It gets lonely when I haven't left the house for a good stretch of days. We can't really walk anywhere. The closest mall is an hour away. We have some pretty creepy animals too (coyotes, foxes). I grew up like this, so I'm sure I'd never hack it in the city.

Even though we live in town, I know the feeling of getting lonely. In the past couple months the boys and I only leave the house if one of us has an appointment or need groceries. Sometime it's a full week before we go out again. It's 15 mins to a town that has anything more than a gas station (except we have a pizzeria in the town over (7mins away) and 2 hours to anything more than Walmart. I wish we could afford to live out of town but it's just not in the cards for now.
I live in Southern NH. I love having all four seasons...although I don't love the two feet of snow that got dumped on us today. Fall makes it worth living here. We were fortunate enough to be able to purchase our dream house. It's large, 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath, almost 4 acres of land. We also have one of the best school systems in the country, so no need for private school! We really love the area and atmosphere of NH, yet we're less than an hour from Boston, so it's nice to have that convenience as well.

DH is from NH, I really love it there. Esp Portsmouth. I could definitely see us living there but the winters are rough (as you note!) and I think DH actually prefers some distance from where he grew up.

We live in California. Love the weather!! Suburbs outside of the big city. A lot of people but not as many as the bigger city.
We own. It's an older home with larger yards. We love the yard and the house is fine for us. There are some upgrades that we would like to do in the near future.
I live in west Michigan. We live about 10 minutes away from grand rapids. I love our location being so close to downtown. Our house is a cape cod with 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's definitely not our forever home. It was a bank owned home and we have done a TON of work. We'll make a good return on our investment when we sell. We will be moving to a town on lake Michigan in the next year or so as DH commutes 40 minutes there to work. I love our summers but could do without the lake effect snow.
Do you know where Baldwin is? My mom lives out there.

yep! it's about an hour and half north of where I live. We usually just pass through Baldwin when we are heading to Ludington during the summer.

DH and I are both transplants to NH, which is part of the reason we like it. I completely understand where your DH is coming from though, a bit of distance is nice. Portsmouth is beautiful, I love all the cute little restaurants and it's nice to be able to walk everywhere. I love visiting friends who live there.
We live in central Illinois. I like that it's a safe place to live and the cost of living isn't bad. I don't like the shitty winters and lack of things to do, especially with children. Not impressed with public school system.
We own a house in a subdivision on the far edge of the city. It's a good location. 3br, 2ba, unfinished basement. Open layout, which we love.
Ohhh great thread! We may be moving within the next year and DH will be given a choice of locations so this is super helpful to hear everyone's experiences!
We currently live in a small town about halfway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It is pretty rural, just like any other town other than NO or BR, but we still have some good restaurants, movie theatre, outlet mall, and Walmart. Our home is in a subdivision/golf course, which is amazing. Everyone is so nice and friendly and has that traditional southern hospitality. My only complaint is that there are not many small children my daughter's age, so I usually take her to the park or indoor playground to have more social interaction. DH also loves to golf, so it works out well for him. Our house is a 4 bed/3 bath custom home built in 2010. I love it but I'm not sure if we will have to put it on the market soon due to DH's future job prospects.
ETA forgot to add that both DH and I were born and raised in the Chicago area and still have all our family and friends there. We moved to LA in August 2013 when I got my fellowship in reproductive endo/women's health.

We live in Cincinnati. I'm originally from FL so the winters have been a big change-I hate it every year. We built a new home and love it. Plenty of room for more babies although our basement is quickly filling up with all of the baby toys and clothes LO has grown out of.

I live in the Midwest in the middle of nowhere and we own our home. I love it because we have a few acres and are creating a mini farm. The winters though can be a bit chilly.
I live outside of Atlanta. We rent (but we are selling our old home) and I like it. We are close to family and everything. I hate southern summers (I'm a damn yankee) but whatev.
The only thing I wish is that they had better parks here. H's family was all "the parks are great" and direct me to this super fantastic park... Only for it to kinda suck (in my opinion) oh well. At least DS has more play dates these days.

We live in west central Illinois, right on the Mississippi. We've only been living here for about a year and a half, although I grew up here. I like the size of the area. There is plenty to do but it's not huge. Chicago is only 3hrs away too. We currently are a block from my parents and three blocks from my sister. It's great being so close!
We are currently living in the home my grandparent's bought over 50yrs ago. It's maybe 1200sq ft, 2 bedroom and 1 bath. The house feels small. There is very little storage, especially in the kitchen. I also hate only having 1 bathroom. The house we actually own is finally under contract (we relocated for DH's job and it took forever to sell our home) so we're starting to look at houses. The one thing I love about this house is all the memories. My grandparents used to babysit us when I was a kid and I spent tons of time at their house. I miss them terribly so it's nice to feel close to them in this way. We are also living practically rent free which has been a huge help since we already have a mortgage.
In our next home we are looking for a minimum of 3 bedrooms and 2 bath with at least 1500 Sq ft, but I prefer closer to 2000. DH requires a 2+ car garage. We've been living with a 1 car garage for 5yrs and it just doesn't work with Midwest winters.

silentsara I'm in NC too! I've lived in several different states and I always ended up back here where I'm from. I love it here and glad we settled in the small country town that we did. It is safe and peaceful, but we can still get to the city quickly if we need things.
barnabee I love that we can visit the NC mountains or the SC beach in just a few hours. There are fun attractions close by us (sports, vineyards, etc.) Also, southern hospitality is a real thing!
I live in SC. I love living so close to the mountains. I really wish we could move about an hour north. I love snow so much and I haven't seen any this year. 45 minutes north of us has gotten snow a few times already.
We visited Charleston a few years back and it was absolutely amazing. DH and I also loved the drive through the mountains. When we drove down (from MI) it was actually snowing on the NC/SC border. It was fun to see how slow everyone was driving because an inch or so had accumulated
I live in VA and we currently rent. We really want to get out of this area. Unfortunately the crime is getting worse and there's a good deal of gang violence. It is even making its way to the nicer areas do to drugs. Hopefully this year we will be buying a house in a better area before ds goes to school.
We live in the suburbs of Chicago in a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house (our first) that we own. DH grew up in the city, I grew up in the suburbs and we bought right by his work in-between both our parents. If I could go back in time, I would not have agreed to put an offer in on this house. It's an old house that needed a lot of renovations when we first moved in. There is still some work left to do that got put on hold when we started our family and probably won't get taken care of. It also happens to be the things I think are the ugliest and would love to see go. I also don't like that we only have one bathroom, our floors are really creaky which causes problems during LO's naps, and our "neighbors" on one side are businesses but I can't complain too much because we bought when the market was at its lowest and we got to start our marriage in a home. We plan to be here for probably another 5 years or so before moving to a bigger house.

DH and I both grew up outside of Chicago! I was born and raised in Oak Park/River Forest, and DH is from Villa Park. I loved my childhood but the move to Louisiana last summer was the best move we could make, haha!
I live in Florida and love it! We lived in Chicago in '13-'14 but moved back to our hometown. I will never live where it snows again! I will take the hot summers to not have to shovel snow! We live in an apartment right now and I love it. It's great not having to do any maintenance. My H and I plan to buy in the next few years, but for now we love our apartment.
I am originally from Santa Rosa, CA. My husband and I now live in Olathe, KS and have for about 7 years now. We own a home in the suburbs with a large yard for our kids to run around We have 2 toddlers and a third baby on the way.
I grew up in the other side of the state line in Missouri but moved to Olathe when I married my husband. I like it here in Olathe a lot.
