Bottle/Sippy Cup/Cups

Is your LO taking milk from a bottle still? Sippy cup? Or a plain old, regular cup?

I was asked this at her 15mo appt (she's 16mo though) and I was like OOPS. 

She's still taking her milk in bottles. Guess I should be working on that. Hoping for her to be off by 18mo. 

I'm nervous to start any REAL cups. She has no control over how much she puts in her mouth and will start gagging. Any ideas? Is there any sippy type cups out there that help transition to an actual cup?

She takes her milk & juice from a regular straw sippy cup.

DD uses sippy cups. I've seen some transitional cups that have tops on them that the LO presses down with their nose when they tip it up. If that makes sense. I'll see if I can find a link.

I guess they press it with their lip...I'm not exactly sure but I think I'm going to try these soon.

Sorry, shes using bottles for her milk and straw sippy cups for water and juice. Our family doc didn't even say he wants her off the bottles, his asking just made me think I should start transitioning.

We use a combination of bottles for milk(bedtime and naps) working on the transition, sippys for water/juice/milk. We also have the "munchkin miracle 360" cups that we use for water/juice.


*EDIT* the miracle 360 cups are kind of like the avent ones posted above just without the handles.

we stopped all bottles around 11 months. SHe started refusing them at daycare so i stopped sending them.
we use straw cups and the take n toss sippy cups.

Sippy cups for water and a straw cup for a milk smoothie (since she refuses WCM).

DD uses straw cups but LOVES to pretend to drink out of real cups. She has a few plastic ones she plays with and she always throws her head back like she's taking a shot. Lol. It cracks me up!

I used to let her drink out of my cups but she always wants control of them. Anddd that we can't have. I tried once, with a half cup of water. And the first thing she did was shake it up and down. While she was still in my arms. I won't be doing that again for awhile.

We use milk in the sippy cups and water in a straw sippy. LO does try to drink out of our water bottles or her plastic tea cups (that are empty) I gave her a tiny amount of water once in a cup but she spilled it all over herself

Straw sippy cup for milk and water. I've tried a regular cup, and they are working w/ her at daycare to use a regular cup. She will take one sip get excited that she did it and then spills the rest on the second sip.

It took awhile to get DS completely off of bottles, but he's now completely using sippy cups. He uses regular cups at daycare but always makes a huge mess when I try it at home.

His favorite cups are Nuby No-Spill Super Spout Grip N' Sip because the spout is soft like a nipple.

Any kind of sippy cup! She also loves to try and use real cups, but she can't manage without spilling all over herself. I'm going to pick up some of those transition ones mentioned above.

My kid just learned how to drink with a straw just the other day. Other than that, she drinks from a sippy cup. Lots of times she likes to give her "babies" a drink from her cup.

DD uses a bottle first thing when she wakes up, and at bedtime. The rest of the day it's straw cups. We are working on getting her totally off bottles, but I'm not in a huge rush.

For the longest time we were doing only bottles at night but his cups have been magically disappearing and I literally don't know where they are so we have been doing more bottles lately. He sometimes wants to drink out of a regular cup so I will give him just enough water in it that I don't care where/if he spills it. I rarely drink out of open top cups myself lol.

Milk and smoothies out of a straw cup (take n toss), water out of a straw sippy (Zoli), since it doesn't dump out. No juice for us. She had gotten in a bad habit of dumping water all over the floor from her take n toss, so we got the Zoli.

Bottles for milk. We are working on breaking the bottle habit but DS loves his bottles and milk. Water in a sippy cup. Trying to get DS to drink from a straw. He does like to drink from an open cup. I need to hold it and he will drink from it. That 360 cup looks like something DS may use.

I have started working on getting her off the bottle but she is pretty stubborn about it. Like last night when I gave her a sippy of milk and she drank most of it and then said "bottle?" and I said Win big girls drink out of a sippy cups, you dont need a bottle. She looked at me like dude are you a moron? and so I said....do you want a bottle? "yep!" are you sure "yep! bottle" shit...ok

We are looking at getting tubes for her so once we are past the ear infections and surgery I will probably get more hard core about it.

RedDDD what led you to decide on the tubes? DD has had SO many ear infections but our doctor still hasn't recommended them. I'm taking her to the doctor tomorrow and plan on talking to them about allergy testing and the posibility of tubes but was curious about your LO's story.

My son had 6 ear infections between 7 and 10 months old so he had his first set at 10 months and his second set at 18 months.  He was a lot younger then my daughter is right now but I can tell you the change in him after the tubes was very obvious.  More alert, less crabby etc.

My daughter has had 5 consecutive ear infections in 4 months.  Basically she can't clear the fluid.  I thought she would end up not having to have tubes because she has been super healthy her whole life but after the last couple of months listening to her talk I am 100% sure she will get them.  at 16 months they are right in the time when their speech is exploding and she says a lot of words that sound like she is deaf which tells me she isn't hearing them accurately.  I also think it has affected her sleep.  When I brought my son in the first time for his hearing test at the ENT I felt awful because it was very clear he was not hearing much at all.  We have our ENT Apt on Thursday so I am super curious to see how she does with the hearing test.  

I just know once she gets the tubes there will be such a change in her.  She is extremely clingy at home and day care and each time she gets really clingy I bring her in and bam! ear infection.  So I just know this will help with her sleeping and hearing as well as her generally feeling crappy all the time.

RedDDD that's great that it helps so much. I've been really frustrated with DD's ears. It just feels like it's one infection after another. I can always tell also b/c she gets fussy and clingy and usually develops a runny nose. She's been on antibiotics since last Saturday and I don't think they've cleared up. She's been horribly crabby lately!

funny the clingy-ness was the only symptom....my son would spike a high fever every time so that is what I was looking for. She never gets a fever but just has cold symptoms. But listening to her speach has pretty much made up my mind. We will see what the ENT says but Im fairly confident it will result in the suggestion of tubes.

LO flat out refuses milk from a sippy. She loved it in a bottle and would drink it no problem, but we took the bottles away after her 15 mo. appt. as her pediatrician wasn't worried if she cut milk for a little while and told us to just keep trying with the cup. She was using it more as a soothing/sleep aid, so we had to break the habit.

Yes, you should be weaning off the bottle by now because it can cause issues with her teeth. But most kids don't master open cups until closer to Kindergarten. My kids both drink their water from a sippy cup. DS drinks milk from a valve-less hard-spout sippy and water from a straw sippy per his personal preference, whereas DD won't drink milk usually but likes to drink from a valve-less hard spout sippy. Both kids have the ability to drink from a cup, which is what that milestone is actually supposed to be measuring, but DD needs an adult to hold it and hlp control the flow; DS just needs the cup to be only about half-full and be reminded to be careful while drinking.

redfraggle - ahh, makes sense. DD can drink from a cup if I hold it for her - she def can't hold it by herself and drink it yet, though. I was worried about her teeth as well because of the bottle. She definitely isn't "attached" to the bottle. We don't use it for naps or bedtime. I'm just worried she won't drink milk if I take away the bottle. Hopefully I can get her to take it from a sippy cup soon.
