How do they know identical this early? (I am a twins newb )
Hope no one minds me answering, but I'm assuming it's because they share a placenta. The only way for fraternal twins to share a placenta is if the cells forming the placentas fused together at an early stage, which is incredibly rare.
It's possible for identical twins to have separate placentas if the embryo split early, so 2 placentas doesn't tell you anything. But one placenta almost certainly means identical.
It can go even further with identicles, where they not only share a placenta but share an amniotic sac as well. (mo/mo twins)

No extra sickness at all, I actually fell pretty good.
We know for sure the are identical, beyond that I don't know (and need to understand the difference). We did IVF and only put one back in. So we 100% know identical.

Holy fucking shitballs! You only put in one but are getting two!! What are the odds?! I personally would be terrified, but congrats on the double whammy!

Woohoo, congrats x2! SURPRISE! ETA: the "what are the odds": pretty good, actually. The odds are definitely higher than non-IVF pregnancies, but I'm sure you knew that. Kind of awesome though, right?

How does IVF increase your chances of an egg splitting?

From what I've read, they are not sure, but a single transfer ends in twins more often than an non-IVF pregnancy. Another edit, argh: I do remember my RE mentioning this as well, when we were at the table discussing options like IVF. I remember because I wanted to know the stats for multiple transfer vs single.

Yes, I too remember reading in my RE's paperwork that IVF embryos split more often than in the general population. Although I don't think it's common by any means, just statistically slightly more likely.
Edited to add the exact quote from my paperwork:
"If only 1 embryo is transferred during IVF (single embryo transfer), the risks of multiple birth are greatly reduced (although the risks are not completely eliminated as you are still 2 to 5 times more likely to become pregnant with identical twins after receiving fertility treatment than after natural conception)."

This is amazing! I mean terrifying but amazing. Does this mean your two names have to be my kid's first and middle, just to keep up to the trend? Haha!
