Out of state births & initial doctor visits

Hi,

For those of you who have adopted out of state, how have you handled the 1st doctor visits?  Seems typically frequency is 5 days, 2 week & 4 weeks ... then 2 months.

I'm pretty sure we won't be back in our home state with the pediatrician by the 5 days, but not sure about the 2 weeks.

We're also going to check with our Social Worker.  If I get any guidance I will let you guys know.

We did this twice. The first time we didn't set up anything in advance and we were told to go to this pregnancy center for the first appointment by the hospital. The second time our son's EM's family suggested a pediatrician. I called to be sure they took our insurance and it was good. I highly suggest you call around in the area and try to set it up to go to a pediatrician. It was a much more nice experience.

Also bring this up to your agency and see if they have any suggestions.

We just had everything happen in-state, but I can say that when R was discharged, the hospital wanted to see her again in a few days if we didn't already have a pediatrician lined up. I love our pediatrician and it was a nice experience going there, but since nothing major happens at the five day old visit, I'm sure the hospital would have done a fine job too.

I'm getting excited for you chicago! I will say that we had less than 24 hours to line up everything (we had nothing) and while not ideal, it can all be done. One step at a time.

For us the hospital wouldn't do the routine appointment but I would ask because it's a good option

We also did this twice...both times the pediatricians at the hospital arranged to see our sons in their offices...as we were out of state 6 weeks and 4 weeks for our two adoptions.
