Birth Control- What method are you using?

I'm sitting in my OBs office undressed from the waist down for my 5 week checkup. I've decided to go back to the Mirena. I used it for 7 years before we decided to try for Allison and I liked it. What method are you planning to use?

Well, it looks like I'll have to wait another 4 weeks before I can do that. My doctor tried, but my body apparently is not quite ready for it. He said not to worry about bc since I'm nursing, I've heard that before, but I've never used that as a method. I think we may use condoms for now.

Paraguard, I had it inserted last Wednesday. Anything with hormones makes me crazy and we hate condoms.

I'm going to talk to my doctor about getting an IUD this time.

H is looking into the big V. He's deathly afraid of me using an IUD (read too many horror stories plus his mom got pregnant while on one).

Until then we'll use condoms when I stop bleeding.

mrspiatt I am pretty surprised your doctor would give you that advice. EBF usually prevents you from ovulating, but it really isn't a super reliable method of birth control. So if you don't want to get pregnant, I think your condom plan is a good one.

I am planning on giving the Paraguard IUD a try. I am not a big fan of BCPs or condoms even though after DS2 we used both the mini pill and condoms along with EBF because we REALLY didn't want to get pregnant. However, I am nervous about trying an IUD.

I'm on the Heather Mini Pill right now but I'm really sucky at remembering to take BC pills. We also will be charting and just avoiding during that time as well as always using the pull-out method. Yeah, I'm hoping I don't get knocked up.

I was thinking about an IUD but I have a few questions. 1. Isn't it like, crazy expensive? 2. I've heard horror stories. I know when you look at the numbers given they seem really low but I know a few people who have told me they had major issues. Anyone here have issues? Which IUD do y'all recommend and why?

We'll be using condoms and charting. I was on the pill basically since I got my period (prolonged bleeding made a GYN prescribe BCP to me very early). When I went off the pills to get KO, I had a bunch of anovulatory, irregular cycles and it took us a year to get pregnant. I am very curious to see if my cycles show any improvement in regularity or ovulation, since we do want to try for at least one more baby at some point.

I think I am going to get the Mirena again. I haven't made up my mind. I gained weight on it and had a harder time losing it. I really don't want to go through that again. But other than that I liked the Mirena.

I'm getting the Mirena, I was on the pill before but obviously was horrible at taking it as I now have a baby sleeping on my chest. We aren't going to try again for at least 2 years

pmcd886- I was pretty surprised he advised me of that too. I think we will go the condom route. abvintage- The only IUD I've used is the Mirena but I loved it. It has a light hormone in it, which I never had any issues with. I gained no weight with it and didn't have any crazy mood swings. I did spot for the first time month, but after that I didn't have a a period for 7 years. The Mirena is good for 5 and then I had another inserted. I don't get billed for it, my insurance covers the full cost, so I don't know what the usual charge is. I don't do well with the pill, I forget way too often and I had horrible mood swings and gained 45lbs with the depo shot.

I got the nexplanon. They verify with insurance before they do it at my office, but they billed mine for 1500. Is covered 100 percent, but holy crap.

Insertion was fine. Numbing shot, then the implant. The bruising I got from the implant was way worse than actually getting it. I bruise very easily. Condoms as backup for 1 month, then good to go. Supposedly nexplanon had a lower failure rate than surgery. Reversible any time. Good for 3 years.

Husband is getting a vasectomy. We're done having kids and I'm done with birth control. My only problem is that I'm a bit nervous about what to do while we wait for the appointment etc. because I do not want to get pregnant again.

mrspiatt pmcd886 I think the lactational amenorrhea method is actually supposed to be 98% effective for 6 months pp if baby is ebf on demand. Condoms wouldn't hurt though!

+1 for nexplanon. Not looking forward to getting it inserted but I cannot remember to take bc pills & I really don't want an iud. They scare me.

My OB and RE have recommended just condoms and charting since we might want to TTC again in a year. If I change my mind then I'm probably going with Mirena.

I have heard this as well. However, I got pregnant while EBF AND using protection. So my view point is skewed toward better to be safe. Obviously the chances of it happening to someone else are extreme slim, but finding out I was pregnant when my baby was a little over four months old is still too fresh in my mind.

I'll probably go back on the mini pill and use condoms. We always use two forms of birth control because I am usually on meds that I can't be pregnant on.

abvintage some insurance companies cover it. I had issues with getting it out. It got stuck. They had to dilate my cervix to try and it was still stuck. Along with the utensil they were using. I had to be put under, dilated more and they pulled it out. I had no issues getting pregnant once it was out and got ku on my 3rd cycle

I had nexplanon after my dd and loved it. The numbing hurt worse than the insertion and +1 for the bruising. The removal was about the same, but I had zero side effects from it. Also did not affect my supply.
Eta : immediately returned to fertility when it was removed.

DH mentioned getting a vasectomy but I doubt that will happen

I had a Paraguard placed after we were married and I loved it, except that I experienced a moderate spell of adult acne after ceasing the orthotricyclen I had taken for so many years before. I guess the bcp had done a lovely job of keeping my (unknown) acne under control.
Because I work in derm, I REALLY don't want to break out again. For anyone who has used mirena, did it help at all with breakouts? Also, any info with the mini-pill?
For anyone who is new to Paraguard, one of the reasons I liked it so much was because was because I still ovulated, which made mid-month sexy time super-fun. That was a huge pro for our relationship.

I'm wondering why people would choose the Mirena over Paraguard- since Paraguard is non-hormonal and can be in for 10 years as opposed to 5? Just curious, any insight?

My Paraguard was $1200, but insurance covered it. I had one in for 10 years, had no issues with it, had it removed and conceived 3 cycles after removal. Just had a new one put in on Wed.
