So I was wondering if any of you out there are seeing a chiropractor? Regular basis or sporadically. I know pregnancy brings aches and pains, but one day I woke up with a pain in my right upper back, could barely turn my head to right, and right arm had a numb ish feeling. My on didn't seem concerned and said to alternate heat and cold... It came back this week without the numbness and pain with turning to the right, so I guess this is an improvement.
All I know is my back is so tight and it hurts!! My baby is always on the right side, so she is probably the culprit. I have never seen a chiro so I was teaching out to see what you guys know! A massage Friday seemed to help just a little bit, but was relaxing at least!
I'm always really hesitant to post anything about this because I don't want to seem like I'm fear-mongering or being a drama queen, but make sure that you don't let the chiropractor do anything to your neck. When I was pregnant with DS, my husband's best friend died of what is called a chiropractic stroke. He was 27 years old and in perfect health other than a sore back.
It's perfectly safe to get an adjustment as long as you're going to someone who knows what they're doing and you don't let them do any kind of neck manipulation.

Yes. I saw a gentle touch chiropractor during my last pregnancy, mostly for pelvic girdle pain. I have an appt with her next Tuesday. This time for sciatic pain.

@blackpearl08 that's kinda awesome you're married to one. I'm trying to just suck it up because at 6 months I'm like... Yep I have a while to go. Just feels like a knot is in my back and it gets intense at times.
marybeth sorry to hear something like that occurred to someone you know! Very scary.
Not to be terribly defensive, but chiropractic malpractice insurance averages less than $2000 a year because people so rarely get hurt from chiropractic treatments. Your OB's malpractice insurance probably runs closer to $400k a year. It is considered a very conservative therapy for a reason.
Definitely not saying that chiropractors are dangerous and should be avoided. I realize what happened to our friend is the exception and not the rule. I probably shouldn't have even mentioned it and I haven't so far on the board for this very reason. But it's always something that's in the back of my mind whenever anyone mentions going to a chiropractor. Like I said before, it's perfectly safe as long as you see a responsible practitioner and avoid neck manipulation.
ETA: and I'm absolutely not trying to attack or bash your husband, and I apologize if I came off that way.

I think this is what's called vertebral artery dissection. It's very very rare, but there have been cases reported. I've seen chiros for years on and off and unfortunately have never found lasting relief.
I believe in what they do, and would never discourage anyone from trying it out. If you want, research vertebral artery dissection and ask the dr about it before he adjusts you.
There is also the option of physical therapy, specifically a PT certified in women's health. I have started to see one for my SI joint pain and it has helped tremendously. PTs can also perform adjustments, and she has done some gentle ones on my low back. I may see her for some post partum care as well.
Years ago I injured my back playing softball and could barely move for months, was doing physical therapy and it was not helping after about 6 months of sleeping on our lazy boy recliner, I went to my first chiropractic visit and was able to stand up straight after. I continued to go regularly for about 3 months and I swear this doctor was a miracle worker for me. Finally, I was not in pain anymore. If I have a flare up, I will go back for a month or so. I was totally skeptical but felt really comfortable with the practice I was at. They did x-rays at the beginning of my care etc. I personally do not care for those that try and push the herbal supplements.
I love going to the chiro!! I went because of lower back pain about two years ago and ended up going regularly because I just felt so much better. I didn't go last year, but picked it up again when I was pregnant. I feel like it helps me avoid some of the pains of pregnancy and also just keeps me in alignment. I fell on my tailbone a year ago and after a day of hard work, it kills me. I am terrified of tailbone issues when further along so I am hoping this will help.
I can stop into my chiro for an adjustment anytime so it's like a treat to me. I try to go at least every two weeks, ideally more. I highly recommend trying it out, especially if you are in pain.
I have pre-existing neck and back issues so I routinely see my chiro every 4 weeks. My back has been so bad with this pregnancy that I'm having to go every 2 weeks. My chiro has tables just for pregnant women so you aren't putting pressure on your tum. I don't know where I would be without my adjustments! I would totally recommend going if you haven't before.
I have been twice while pregnant for hip/pelvic pain. I could barely sit for 10 minutes without being really uncomfortable. I have been as needed PP. I went to a Dr that had helped DH and DD in the past. His main method of treatment is Gaston Tools (almost like a butter knife and ointment of some sort. I was actually adjusted for the first time ever two weeks ago. Not sure how I feel about it, but it did help A TON.
I've been thinking about booking an apt with my chiro lately. I have underlying back issues (I injured my back on the job just about 2 years ago from catching a patient mid-fall) and I SWORE by my chiro pre-pregnancy. After my injury, I was on pain killers and muscle relaxers for my spasms. It was awful. Once I started seeing the chiro, I completely came off every medication and haven't needed it since.
I haven't seen him in a while, and my spasms have been starting back up again, hence why i'm probably going to call this week to set up an apt.

I see one at least once a week, and I was never big on chiropractors before my pregnancy with DS, even though my mom and DH both see one regularly. My story is that I started seeing a chiropractor trained in the Webster method late in my first pregnancy, because we learned DS was breech. Up until that point, I had been really uncomfortable off and on and would even have trouble getting in and out of our SUV and walking around sometimes. Although the chiro treatments weren't successful in getting DS to turn in time, almost all my aches and pains went away after I started seeing her. So, I have drunk the Kool-Aid on chiro treatments, at least during pregnancy.
I do prefer to see a chiro with Webster method training and they often have special tables for pregnant women. But, I think that's a matter of preference.
Went today. I've been having sciatic pain for 9 weeks. This has caused me to walk differently and has messed up my upper back too. My midwife suggested that I go and get adjusted. It was my first appointment and don't have my first alignment until Friday. I'll keep you posted if I get relief or not.

I see an osteopath. In my experience she is much more gentle than any chiro I've ever been to. She sees me on an as needed basis. Usually about once a month. I start early in pregnancy because I have some serious lower back and hip pain.
