Hi Ladies,
I mostly want to put this on here, just in case some other crazy mom needs to google "bat in the house" they can find some information. Also, so you guys may have a laugh!
Last Thursday, I was starting my evening chores of getting everything ready for the next day, including washing DD's bottles. I like to have them sit in hot soapy water for a while then clean them. So, I went to grab a pot out from the bottom cupboard, I put in the soap, bottles and water. I let the water run while I went to check on DD who was playing in her bouncy chair. I went back into the kitchen, turned off the water, and stuck my hand in the pot to really get those bottles down in there. As my arm when down A BAT JUMPED UP AND HIT MY ARM LIKE A FUCKING JACK IN A BOX!!!! I screamed, the bat screamed and then I ran, grabbed the baby and the dogs, ran upstairs to the room and called DH for backup. I had no clue what to do, and really didn't think about what a big deal this was. So DH came home, the bat was still in the sink, sitting on the pot or something, he opened the kitchen door which is right next to the sink, tapped the bat a few times and away it went. We moved on with life. Then, we learned/remembered; rabies. I had to call animal control; they couldn't do anything since we got the bat out of the house. Had I used my brain, I would have called them; they would have come to get the bat and tested it for rabies. I blame mommy brain and fear of the bat. Followed by 2 calls to a nurses line and then after a very long night finally the health department. I was told to go get the rabies shots, while the bat did touch my arm, we couldn't rule out 100% that there was no bite. Bats have small teeth and may not even leave a visible mark. He expressed that I was able to continue to breastfeed as usual, a fact I went over with the doctor as well. Everyone in the house, dogs, DH and DD were all okay since none of them were alone in the room with the bat! A fact he had to go over with me about 1000x. I had to get 3 shots in my butt and one in my arm that day; I have to go back 3 different days for 1 shot each as well. It’s not been fun, and we’ve had our house checked for additional bats. The only thing we can assume is that since it was warmer out (45) the bat had come out to get a drink or something (dept of health's suggestion) and flew in as I was letting my dogs in. Thankfully, they never saw the bat or they would have killed it and this situation could have been worse. Needless to say, we open every door and cupboard with extreme caution. DD’s pediatrician said that this was the best story in the office, even beating out some lady and a snake! Lol!
