Does anyone else's LO seem to only want/need one side at a time? For the last week or two C rarely has been taking the second boob. She'll just fuss and unlatch. I don't even try at night.

She has tons of poopy diapers and I *think* she is still gaining ok. I almost miss the LC check-ins. They gave me peace of mind...

abvintage didn't you say you bought a scale for weighted feeds? I'm seriously considering it...

Laverne, you might want to check with your ped. She passed birth weight, but since she had so much trouble gaining at first, they still want us to wake her every 2-3 hours during the day (but graciously said we could go 4 at night).


Also, LC check in today was awesome--she gained 12 oz in the last week!!! I am so happy. Evidently she does not have a a tongue tie but is having trouble using her tongue properly (which is preventing her from getting milk from nursing, as shown by our weighted feed). Next stop is an OT, which seems really weird for a kiddo who is not quite a month old, but I'm up for it if it means we can return to nursing.

For now, I have to keep pumping for the most part

Yes. About 50-50. dS1 was always a one side eater.

I feel so incredibly guilty for not loving breastfeeding. It is been so stressful. But then of course at the suggestion from an LC that I think of only pumping, I cried and didn't want to! Such a mind game.

My girl is also eating about every hour and a half during the day. i'm eager to stretch it out but I'm letting her decide when. Some days we will have a 2 to 3 hour stretch so I'm hoping it'll be a norm in the future! Luckily she is giving a 4-6 hour stretch at night.

How much does your LO weigh now, hopefulreturn? My guy is still not 9 lb yet, but I'm hoping as he gets bigger those stretches get a little teeny tiny bit longer. Like, to be able to go 2 hours in between during the day (consistently) would be awesome. We haven't let him go any more than about 3.5 hours in the night yet, but I see that happening in our not-too-distant future. 

We are over 9 pounds now. The doctor cleared us not to wake for night feedings about a week ago and felt it was ok for her to have one long stretch. Even when she wakes it isn't as bad as setting the alarm! Fingers crossed you get there soon. I won't go longer than 3 hours during the day, but she's usually letting me know her desire to eat way before that!

And I hear you on maternity leave feelings. Everyone keeps telling me how much I must be loving it. Guilt for not necessarily feeling that most days. But at the same time I don't want to leave her with anyone but DH. So going back to work will be hard.

Mine has been doing this on and off. I will burp him and wait for him to bob to see if he wants more.

Today DH has given our Lo two bottles. He forgot that I had two ounces on the fridge from pumping yesterday and gave him formula this am while he let me sleep. And then I went to get us pizZa (seriously screw pizza commercials on Fridays) and LO woke screaming for food so he got the two ounces. In total I've pumped 6.5 oz today! I stashed away four of it and left the other 2.5 in the fridge for tomorrow. We seem to be hitting a small routine where DH gets up, has his coffee, then takes LO to let me sleep in bed a few hours. I get up have lunch and pump. I wS excited to actually store some away today for when I go back to work in a few weeks.

I've only ever done one side at a time. I read early on that your hind milk production can go down if you aren't emptying and he doesn't feed for long enough to empty both sides.

Woke up with crazy itching in both breasts. No fever. Redness in the itchy spots, which are mostly on the side/bottom (not around the nipple).

Anyone else had this?? WTF is it?

Just had to share, according to the medela bottles that I pump into, I just pumped 3 ounces in 3 hours! I have never pumped that much in that time frame! I used Pumpin Pals breast shields and I hope it means I will actually see a slight increase in supply (even though I am doubtful it actually will).

My LO always just eats from one side per feeding.

We've only ever done one side per feed.

My right boob is cray cray, I pumped 2.5 oz in 2 minutes, usually fill both bottles in about 5 minutes.
Nelson just started one boob n done at about 4 weeks. Makes nightime feed easy, he will still ask for 2 at witching hour. I was told at hospital to offer 2nd boob and then, the next feed start with the boob i left off on, so they both get equal opportunity to empty.

So I nip for the first time yesterday. We were at an appt to check Ava's hips and halfway through she needed to eat. The ultrasound tech just stood there and watched me while I got her latched, which was kind of weird, but I realized that when my baby is screaming for food I really don't care. I know this may sound like nothing to some of you veteran nipers (hehe) but it was a big step for me!

Breastfeeding

No supplementing

It's going well.

What has been the biggest struggle? If you overcame it, what did you do? Biggest struggle was/is sore nipples!!! I pump when my nips need a break. It works well for us. My husband is able to feed him and I can get some free time. All parties involved are happy.

Advice for others? When things seem rough and you want to give up, ask questions and reach out for support. I guarantee you are not the only one dealing with the issue!

I sort of NIPed today! My parents had 30+ family members over for a crab feast and I was semi-successful nursing E while sitting outside with everyone. He got super fussy on my right side, since the flow there has really picked up. I did cover with a blanket since the family is super modest in general.
I almost wanted to cry, this BFing thing has been such a struggle. I never thought I would be able to NIP with the way things have gone. It was nice to do amongst a large family group first.
I had a really good conversation with one aunt who also really struggled with her first but eventually got it and BFed her 4 kids for quite awhile.

Just when I think we have things down, we have a shit night. I always dread the night. We nursed so well all day yesterday and supplemented with formula after each feed. Then at night she refuses the right side again and just screams. I can't wait for my LC appointment.

Also, have any of you nursed exclusively from one side and pumped the other? A friend of mine mentioned she did it when her LO refused one side. Just wondering if it's relatively common...

When you are nursing your lo and you can tell they have stopped eating and are just hanging out/using you as a paci, do you ever take them off, or always wait for them to unlatch on their own?

I take him off when he stops swallowing. Then, when I put him up to my chest, I can either tell he is done or needs to be put back on (when he starts rooting again).

I try to motivate him for 15 minutes, a lot of times i tease his cheek and pretend to break the seal and that gets him eating, some websites recomend "switch feeding"
But i would try compressions and pestering before that

For those who had thrush, what were your symptoms? I've googled so much and I have no idea whether I just still have sore/cracked nipples or if it's thrush. A is 2 weeks old. The symptoms online seem the same for both since A doesn't have any visible symptoms in her mouth. I use breast shells during the day and mama earth nipple butter...as long as they are super moist, they are ok. The minute they get dry or too aired out, they hurt so bad and that's what happens at night since I can't wear the shells. Latching is super painful but only for a few seconds and feeding doesn't hurt at all.

I called my doc last week but she didn't seem concerned. I have appointments with lactation consultants this week. just wasn't sure what you all experienced. Thanks!

The thing that made it obvious to me was the constant dull burning/stinging feeling in my nipples. That sensation didn't go away when she wasn't feeding.

Also...moist makes thrush worse.

Your symptoms don't sound like thrush, but probably a problem with latch or some other part of nursing.

Thanks 2dumbdogs! I've been worried about the moisture issue since it makes thrush worse and it's the only thing that makes me feel better. I'm hoping I'm not making things worse. I just wish they would heal!!!

Worst letdown pain EVER. It's basically like being tased in the boobs. And it comes every 2 hours even though I pump every four. I've read that it supposed to go away but anyone that's BTDT got a timeframe on that?
