Google Forms Experts Please Help!

I am developing a new workflow using Google Forms. It's a data request form and I would love for it to automatically assign a request # either in the form itself or in the tracking sheet. I added a column to the tracking sheet and put in a prepopulated number, but it didn't work. It just added the forms response on a new row and shifted the cells with the prepopulated number down. I am going to try conditional formatting to assign a number - something like if A1 has a response, fill column X1 with ###+1. Would something like that work? Or is there an add-on or something I can get to assign the number? Thanks!
