At my MFM appointment on Friday 9/18, my blood pressure was high. The nurses checked my urine, but I didn't have any protein in it. I had my regular weekly OB check-up on Tuesday, 9/22 and had high blood pressure again. My urine was clear, but the doctor diagnosed me with prenatal hypertension. Since I was full term and she didn't want it to turn into pre-eclampsia, the doctor decided to induce me that day. I was 60% effaced and 1 cm dilated. I was told to go home and pack my hospital bag and head to L&D. I called my husband after the appointment and we headed to the hospital around 1:00.
At L&D, I was given cytotec to get the process started around 2:30 pm. The cytotec gave me contractions that started occuring every 1-2 minutes and eventually were happening constantly, one after another. The dr. decided to skip the next dose of cytotec at the 4 hour mark to see if the contractions would space themselves out. When they didn't, they gave me a shot to slow them down. At that point, I was 2 cm dilated, where I stayed for hours. They eventually started me on pitocin. Around 7 am the dr. came in to break my water and my dilation happened more often after that. I was given an epidural around the afternoon, but the tech had to do it twice due to my scoliosis. Around 4 pm or so, I was 9.5 cm dilated where I stayed for a few hours. Around 6 pm, I was able to start pushing even though the nurse could still feel a bit of cervix in one spot. I pushed for a while and the dr. decided to perform an episiotomy. After that, he came very quickly.
Alex.ander Mich.ael was born at 8:54 pm on Wednesday, 9/23. He was 9 lbs. 2 oz. and 21 1/2 inches long. Due to his being in the birth canal for so long, the poor guy was born with a bit of a cone head (which has since gone away). Besides his kidney issue and a little jaundice, he's doing great!
