Shot-pocalypse is going well so far. DS2 and DD are sound asleep in the car, so I decided to go pick up DS1 early from pre-K and be one of "those moms" in the car line, 30 minutes early!
It's about raising a spiritual child. I'm absolutely loving it. My DS1 asks so many great, spiritually driven questions: what is evil? what is death? can God hear me? Yeah -- big questions, so tough. Lisa Miller (the guest on Here and Now) talks about how important spirituality is for children (not necessarily tied to religion).
Such awesome research and insight that I thought I'd share.
ETA: two-month visit went well! Isaac is in the 95th percentile for height and weight, unadjusted. (Confirming my suspicion that the kid is huge.)
We're in hurricane prep mode. We brought in all the patio furniture and tied down the trash cans. The dilemma? I'm at my parents house 5 hours from my house. DH is coming to get us tomorrow (I dare not drive that distance alone. If the binky comes out its a scream fest). We were going to head back Saturday to beat the storm and ride it out but I'm scared we could get bad flooding. We live in a flood zone. My back yard is a pond after a quick rain storm. I'm really debating staying at my parents just in case it does get bad at our house. Oh we live at the beach...my concerns are valid lol. Although I do tend to freak out about weather events.

I have no idea what we're going to do. We live right on the Chesapeake Bay, so flooding is a very real possibility. Hubster is supposed to be at work on Sunday & Monday, so me & lil bub might be on our own. When I lived in DC, all I had to worry about was the occasional down tree blocking a street or sidewalk. Now I have to worry about power, contaminated water, flooding, evacuation....ugh. Not how I wanted to spend my last weekend on maternity leave!
I'd prepare for the worst kaeguri. I'm so sorry about the rain.
gingerygirl hope they fix the fridge soon. How frustrating. I may have missed it but how is the rash?
it's better this morning. It's not bleeding anymore and its pink instead of bright red. We had him airing out in the tub for about an hour before he couldn't stand it anymore and then we had him sleep bare bottom on his tummy. This morning I diapered him with baby powder and later I'm going to the store to buy coconut oil.

girlonabike, my parents live right by the James river and my brother lives very close to the Chesapeake. Flooding risk is really high for them too. I live just south of Richmond on the Appomattox river so im not sure if im in danger of floodong or not. I hope we're all safe in this storm.

We've never lived at the beach during a hurricane so I have no idea what to expect. I don't know how evacuations work here either. I'm hoping it turns more east and completely misses us. Thankfully we are no longer at a chance for a direct hit, I hope...
FX that everyone stays safe in the storm! I'll be thinking of all of you.
E has been sleeping aside from an hour or two here & there since 11p last night. I feel so bad for her bc I'm sure it's bc she's not feeling well. I gave her my cold. But I've been able to do 4 loads of laundry & clean the house. I'll probably try to get her up after I eat so she doesn't stay up all night.

Fx for those in hurricane zone. I went through one in a trailer when we lived in south Carolina. Not fun.
I'm pretty sure that A has better eyesight than me. She looked in the mirror about six feet away and I smiled at her in the mirror. She smiled back. Without contacts, I can't see more than about 6 inches from my face.
So, according to all the parenting websites and books I should be playing with A all the time, she should be grabbing rattles, responding to my smiles, and enjoying all of this. Except that she takes a half hour to nurse and then I have to hold her upright for a half hour and then she starts to get over tired and fussy. Does anyone else have a baby who can't seem to stay awake for more than an hour?
ETA: But who still will only sleep for one 3 hour stretch of sleep at night.
I had my 6 week check up today, lunch out and a super real quickie, nothing like jumping back in head first.
Tomorrow we head to the beach! Its only 1 night but still, the beach is my happy place. Plus in laws who will watch the kiddos giving hubs and me some much needed kid free time. Yea!!!
aracale .. I worry about this all of the time. Little A is either sleeping, eating, or crying. There's maybe an hour total where she is content and I can interact with her. I'm hoping it's normal?? I read an article last night that said babies should get 30-90 mins of tummy time each day. EACH DAY. Thaaaat is not happening in this house (maybe 10 mins total) so now I'm all freaked out that she's never going to develop her neck muscles
does she lift her head when your holding her? That's her strenghting her neck muscles!
I think the people who write those articles don't live in the real world. We didn't do a ton of tummy time with dd and she is perfectly normal.

A doesn't get traditional tummy time. My pediatrician said that if I put her on my chest on her tummy while she's awake that counts. I lay her on my chest for part of the time that I'm holding her upright. So at least that's one thing that we're doing. I also try to talk to her and play with her art cards while I'm holding her up, but with limited success.
aracale DD2 can only handle an hour, maybe 1.5 hours awake at a time, so I worry about the same thing. Also, the last few days she's only napped with me holding her, but has been staying happy for short periods of time on the playmat. So I use that time to go pee or eat or shower, but then I'm not playing with her as much during her awake time. I just try to do what I can.
I also was told that 50% of awake time should be on her tummy. We definitely don't do that, but since most of her nap time is not on her back (being held or worn) I'm not too worried about flat spots. And she's held so much while awake that she strengthens her neck then too.
Since H was working crazy hours last week, he had his mom babysit and took me out for a belated birthday lunch today. It was a Greek feast, and it was awesome.
It's 5:30 and I just now realized it's Thursday. Thursdays are my Fridays. DH and I go off duty tomorrow morning and I am SO ready for the weekend. But this also means I have extra paperwork to do tonight for shift changeover in the morning because so much has happened at the ranch this week (which is one of the reasons I've been MIA on here for days).
I'm bringing a 6week old baby to Austin city limits tomorrow. I bought hearing protection for her. We are only going for like 3 hours for the headliner. This is not a completely horrific idea, right? Uggghh.
I did that with DS1 when he was about 7 months to an outdoor concert a friends band was playing. DS was a huge hit with the drunks (it was St Patrick's Day).

No side eyes from me.
Uhhh, especially cause the concert is foo fighters! Hello!
Had our one month checkup today! Things are good and he's a big boy. 10lbs 14oz and was 9lbs 10oz last Wednesday so all of this cluster feeding has added up.
The pedi said "you can't spoil a baby" when I told him sometimes all N wants is to be held. That being said, he said it is also okay for me to let him cry when I know he's just crying to be held.. Obviously don't let him do it for long but see if he'll self soothe. He said although it's vital for me to take care of him, I also need to take care of myself.. So if that means I have to sit him down so I can eat, do it.
Also, the past two days I've pumped and gotten almost nothing (three times yesterday and only got an oz). I was going to call LC today but decided to change my flange size from 24 to 27 and that worked!

We aren't on the coast, but it's been raining all week and is supposed to continue up to when the hurricane hits which will bring us even more rain. Which means our newly finished basement might be in trouble.
Sending hubby out for an extra sump pump...just in case.
