Temping and sleeping question

I wasn't sure if I should piggy back this on the temping question below or not, so sorry if a new thread was the wrong choice!

I wake up a lot during the night. Every couple of hours or so. If I'm just waking up, rolling over then going back to sleep, or maybe passing the remote to H, do I need to start my 3 hours over again? That's what I've been doing this week, and I never get to 3 hours.  I'm getting frustrated.  Do you think I'll be able to see a pattern with out making it to 3 hours?

My concern is that I'll be setting my self up for additional confusion by having charts that are all messed up.

In my experience (YMMV) if you "wake up" to roll over and go back to sleep it won't affect your temps. If you are restless, awake for long periods of time it might start to affect your temps.

Most nights I do wake up as I roll over but I got right back to sleep and usually don't remember that I even "woke up".

If you're just waking up & rolling over I think you're fine. If you were waking up & going to the bathroom/getting a drink/taking care of your kid/staring at the ceiling etc etc I would suggest aiming for 3 hours from that point. It's hard to say what will affect your chart or not because everyone is different.

Aim to temp at the same time daily, after 3+ hours of sleep. As you temp longer you'll see what will/won't affect your temps. Add in some secondary info (OPKs or CM for example) to help FF figure out the pattern. A random higher temp here or there really isn't a big deal.

Okay, thanks! I'll just try temping every morning at 3am, and see what happens. If after a couple months my charts are wonky, I'll try something else.

It's not rocket science, I really should be able to do this with out so many questions.

Also, it sounds like this is something you do every night - in that case, I would think it may be more akin to sleeping with an electric blanket (where it's fine as long as you use it every night so that the impact on temps is consistent from night to night). I think a bigger issue would be if you usually sleep like a log but once a week you are up and restless all night. I'd just keep temping at as close to the same time as you can for now and see if you can see a shift. If you are temping orally, you may also want to try vaginal temping next cycle, as that seems to help for women who have rockier oral temps.

The first month or two is the biggest challenge for temping. Once you get the hang of it, you'll start to notice your own patterns and know if you can sleep in every now and then without throwing your temps way off, etc. But, I would say, be as disciplined as you can the first month or two to try to get it around the same time (hopefully you won't even have to do it longer than that!) Some people have a vastly different temp at different times, some don't. Just be as consistent as possible and you should still see some results. Also, I second doing OPKs and CM so you have additional signs of ovulation to go along with your temps.

I temped whenever, however I felt like it for the first cycle and it showed. When I came to the place that shall not be named, I was told that my chart looked crazy and I needed to be consistent with something. So I temp at the same time everyday and now it looks much better!

You'll probably be fine. My issue is missed temps, but once I started using opks along with temping FF had an easier time pinpointing my O.

I wake a lot during the night, because we cosleep with DD and she's a terrible sleeper. I was able to see a shift when I finally O'd (after 2 months of rocky temps), and now my temps seem to have leveled out. I think you should be fine if you keep all other factors consistent. For me, I have to temp at the same time and I make sure never to physically get out of bed within an hour or two of when I will temp.

I never noticed a significant difference on restless nights versus normal/calm nights. I'm a restless sleeper in general though. Perhaps a small increase on an especially wakeful night, but never anything that threw off a chart for me. It's different for some people. I also always temp at the same time, regardless, and that helped me personally.

One thing you can do in this early phase is make lots of notes for yourself. Everyday, when you enter your temp, write down how you slept - how restless you were. Not sure about your cm? Write down a bunch of descriptive notes and take your best guess. Then you have something concrete to refer back to later as you try to spot your own trends and patterns.

I'm a light sleeper and get up occasionally for my LO, but w/ the exception of some random temps I can usually see a pattern and enough of a shift to confirm. Remember it isn't about one or two temps, it's the overall pattern for the cycle. If you are having issues you can temp vaginally.

This so much. You tell yourself not to do something but find yourself wondering. Every temp you start to anaylze and every wake/roll/room temp. After a month or two it gets better and just becomes part of your routine! If you are unsure about something-make a note in the notes section. At the end of the cycle you can go back and look and see if X,Y, or Z affected you or not.
