First appointment - how was yours?

How did your first appt go!?  It seems like we've had quite a few now!

I had mine on Friday and it went really well.  Saw the baby on the U/S, measuring 2 days ahead and 153 bpm (at 7w2d).  I asked my OB a few questions and she seemed very flippant about all of my questions, like yeah, yeah we'll talk about that at 10 weeks.  I asked about AMA and additional testing, how it will be different than last time, if there was anything I should change now (diet/exercise), pre-E risk given last PG, etc.  I love her and had a great experience with her for DS, but I couldn't tell if the vague responses were just because it's #2 and she was trying to reassure me, or if  she didn't want to invest until I'm further along.  It made me paranoid, even though everything checked out perfectly!  I think I just need to take a chill pill and not overthink things!

I don't have mine until Thursday but I'm sorry she made you feel that way. I feel like OBs lack compassion sometimes because they see so much and it's nbd to them.

I've had 2 appts so far (3 if you count the confirmation appt that they brought me in for super early) and the most recent one showed a strong heartbeat and an embryo measuring approximately 7w. I go back on the 12th for a dating u/s to hopefully get a more accurate measurement.

I'm sorry your OB was dismissive sandandsea,. If she was great last time, maybe she was just having an off day and will be more attentive at future appointments. If not, time to shop for a new doctor! Pregnancy is emotional enough on its own without having to deal with a bitchy doc.

I don't actually see my OB for the first time until I'm 16 weeks (in December!) she's who I had last time too, and she always seemed vague, short and quick.
She probably gets asked the same questions a hundred times a day.
I'm sorry she didn't address your concerns. I want to think that there's nothing to worry or really do differently from what you're already doing - she probably doesn't even know if you'll get Pre E or anything either.

Also, for my OB and maybe the same with yours, it's not "invested" yet but just specific time blocks for types of appointments. My OB only does "first appointments" on Wednesdays where you're whipped in and out of there, but at a subsequent appointment took more time (Doppler, asked about questions etc).

In hoping you caught an off day and as your pregnancy progresses it will be a positive experience again

I just had my first two today. First one was intake stuff with all the medical history that they already have and signing paperwork for various tests. Second was a pelvic and breast exam and stuff. Then blood drawn and more cup peeing for the labs.


I'm sticking with the midwives this time, so that will be a bit of a different experience. I see them on the 30th.

I just had mine today. I saw a midwife from my practice and really liked her. She just went though family history, how the practice works, genetic testing options and sent me for some bloodwork. I scheduled my ultrasound for Friday. I hope your next appointment is better sandandsea

My first appointment was good. I was pretty sure I was going to get some bad news, but baby was looking good, measuring 7 weeks. It was my RE, so now I'll meet a nurse midwife at the regular OBs next Wednesday.

sandandsea, sorry your OB was dismissive! I loved my old OB that delivered my son, but I had no idea until I got my new OB-my new OB is AMAZING. She is so thoughtful, takes her time, is reassuring, answers questions, checks in on you. She is seriously only like 30 and has only been practicing for a year, so I'm sure it's all really fresh since she's so young and not jaded, but it's still refreshing.

My next appointment isn't until next Thursday, 4 weeks after the ultrasound we saw the heartbeat at. I'll be 10.5 weeks. I'm pretty nervous, but I think that's just PGAL brain. Do you think she'll ask about genetic testing etc. then? I want to do the NT scan, but they never mentioned it at my 7 week appt. so I am not sure if I should call, or just mention it at my appointment since they could probably get me in the next week and still be within the time frame.

I've been going to this OB/GYN for about 12 years now and really like her. She is generally really good at listening and explaining things and she's very warm and fuzzy. DH was with me and he said she was probably just trying to not be patronizing since it's not my first rodeo. I think it was just an off day and she was running behind and the U/S told her everything she needed to know so she wasn't worried about anything and was saving more discussion topics for the later, longer appt slot.

She did say that even though I did have Pre-E after 40 weeks last time and was induced that there was less of a chance of Pre-E this time, but didn't go into any details like she normally does. I think I'm just reading too much into it. I'll blame it on hormones!

My OB said they'd talk about testing at my 10 week appt.  They said it's very non-invasive now and most can be done with a scan and a blood test now, so it's really easy now.

My first appointment was just a chat with my family doc about dos and donts, options in terms of midwifery vs OB care, etc. First ultrasound is on Thursday which will be 7 weeks, 4 days. Hoping for a heartbeat and good measurements to calm down my PGAL brain.

We did the blood test last time and it was super quick. Will probably be getting it done again this time as long as my insurance will still cover.

My first first appointment was with a nurse practitioner at 5weeks where they took family history, drew betas, and went over how I can maintain a healthy pregnancy. My first OB was an ultrasound followed by an appointment with my OB. The ultrasound was a dating one and to make sure things are ok because of my history (lots of bleeding with DS due to fibroids). My OB did a routine check (include a pap) and ordered some blood and urine tests.

This was all at 8w3d, my next appointment is at 12w4d and is the NT screen (partially due to my age, but also because DH wants another ultrasound) and my routine 12w OB appointment. I will go in every 4 weeks for now unless concerns arise.

What type of family history questions did they ask?

I had my first RE appointment today! Not as exciting as an OB appointment (I'll be really excited for the milestone meaning of that, and also I like all the info pamphlets they give you there). But at my date with the dildo camera today, we got to see the yolk sac and a tiny tiny flicker of an early heartbeat.

Being a FTM, I'm kind of liking being at the end of the month, I've got 4 weeks to know all the intricacies of what is coming so I can interrogate my doctor to my hearts desire.

I had no idea there was a dildo camera! I thought it was only done through the abdomen. So naive.

Are all first ultrasounds done vaginally? Are there circumstances where it's done one way vs. the other?


I hate Pap smears cuz they're pinchy to me, and I'm not looking forward to this so much anymore.

They usually only do transvaginal ultrasound before 10 weeks, then you get them on your stomach, thankfully! I've had so many that I'm used to them, but they can still be uncomfortable.

GOmamab15 I've only had it hurt once and that was during IVF. They don't use a speculum, and it's ahem, quite slender so it's not bad.

I became acquainted with the dildo cam when we started fertility treatments. Checking out the ovaries for follicles, etc.

My uterus is tilted & my ovaries are hard to find, so there was always a lot of pressure. No pain though.

As the other ladies have stated typically it is only used during really early pregnancy.

Mine was great. We got to see our little blob. I think the ultrasound equipment at the RE's office is better than the OB. My 6 week ultrasound with my DD is clearer than my 7 week with this baby. We did get to see the flicker of the heartbeat and hear it for a few seconds. It was wonderful. Then we talked to the OB who was with u through my last pregnancy.

He knows my history of anxiety and about our chemical pregnancy, and fertility issues to get pregnant with our first. He was so excited for us this time and reassuring and asked me to ask him every question I had even if it's silly.

He said that if I'm ever feeling nervous, to just give them a call and I can come in anytime for a Doppler. I most likely won't take him up on that offer, but it was nice to hear.

I'm going back the first week of December for the first tri screening ultrasound and bloodwork. Can't wait to see the baby again.
