Let's play hide and seek from the measles

Thoughts on this:

In AZ we are starting the feel the effects of the outbreak of measles. H is starting to be concerned enough to ask me to be more cautious. So past hand washing, not letting him lick random things while we're out, using cart covers or wearing him. What else could I possibly do to be more cautious against something that is contagious days before symptoms are even present (scary right?)?

Keep in mind I have a 4 year old (omg I have a 4 year old ) that we need to do play dates, get out to playgrounds, zoo trips...you know go somewhere to keep from going nuts in the house.

My understanding is it's not spread by touch, but by breathing...so short of putting a facemask on baby every where I have no idea.

We were just in CA & didn't go to Disney, but were in San Diego & now I'm totally freaked out.

It's spread like a cold basically. So if someone wiped their boogers on their hand or sneezed and didn't wash their hands then touched stuff, then someone touches that stuff it can spread. It can live on surfaces for up to 2 hours.

I don't know what else you could do besides the things you mentioned :-( i guess just making sure no one you don't know touches him. It's really scary.

A lot of hand washing and hand sanitizer between washes. Other than that I have no suggestions.

When you are out in public, keep your hands away from your face as much as possible. Most germs are spread through your mouth, eyes, and nose.

Lots of hand washing and hand sanitizing. When you wash hands, wash for at least 30 seconds with warm water and soap.

Use a paper towel/napkin/tissue to open bathroom doors.

Bring disinfecting wipes to wipe down surfaces like restaurant tables, restaurant menus, door handles, carts, etc.

I ALWAYS ask people to wash their hands before getting near LO.

I understand that you don't want to be confined in the house, but I would try to be as creative as possible with home activities. Maybe try to have more play dates at home instead of at public places? Or at least try to do this until LO can have his/her measles vaccine? Good luck!

This whole thing has me worried too  DH & I are staffing an anime convention a week after LO's bday, that's going to have thousands of people. We got a hotel room for my mom and she was gonna watch LO while we worked, but we were hoping to be able to take her around the con a little bit too (maybe even get a little costume for her). All this stuff about the measles is making me want to keep her locked up in the hotel room the whole time

Our 12mo appt is currently scheduled for 4 days before the convention, but I think I'm gonna call and see if we can get it moved up, or if not, at least come in earlier for just the vaccine. Her bday is 4 days before her appt, and the vaccine takes 5-10 days to take effect.

The other thing you CAN do is ask your pedi to give your baby's first MMR early. I have no idea if they would, but I don't see why not in light of what is happening. I'm sure glad M has his MMR already (due to traveling) and that I don't have to worry about anything. Our LOs are close enough to 1 that they can get it! M was 8.5mo when he got his and we had no problems after.

I was just going to say the same thing as babycaps. My LO had a check up today, and I asked about the MMR because it's now in my town too. My pedi had no problems giving it early, but just said that she may have to have an additional booster down the line since the first was given early.

We have a weight check & follow up for some other things today, I plan on asking about this. Especially since we're going to Puerto Rico in March over his first birthday.

Maybe it's a Canada thing but I'm not able to get any of the 1 year shots for DD until she is 1 year + 1 day old. With recent outbreaks in Canada I've been pretty worried about it. I want those shots now!

That said, I have no other advise to give than hasn't been given already.

I think it's a regional thing. I wasn't able to get any shots early with DS1 or LO and was told the schools won't accept the shot record and then the kids have to redo the shots. I've also been told insurance as a reason. So either early isn't happening. Yet!

So we can get it early because of Puerto Rico but then he will need it again after 12 mo too or it's too far between the boosters? babycaps does M need it again after 12mo too?

Talked to pedi today. We're going to move her 12m appt to right on her bday, which will be 8 days before the beginning of the convention (or 6 days before we leave to set up). Doc said that should be enough time for it to be effective, and if we got it any earlier than that it wouldn't count for school and we'd need to redo it.

bennieangel, yes, he will get again at 12mo. I knew this going in and have no problems letting him be double safe!
