Like I don't have to buy my kid diddly squat til springtime cause as the baby of a giant family I know she's about to get straight rained on this year. That's a pretty huge gift for me and SO.
budders its such an awesome feeling isn't it? We were there for a month in the summer but they just miss him so much. I wanted to go back home but H could never get the time off that time of year so there's no way we could go. I've not been with my family at Christmas for years so I can't wait ::wells up::
I'm so happy that you guys are getting to be with family for Christmas. What a great gift Joolschweets!! We are flying home to VT for 2 weeks at Christmastime. I am so excited I can't stand it. We'll get to see all of both of our families, and B will get to spend some quality time with everyone. I'm hoping we'll find some time to play in the snow since we can't really do that in Alabama. Ah! Christmas can't here quickly enough!
Ok so I added the illustrated Harry Potter book to my list... so now I'm both a child wanting a picture book and an old lady that wants an expensive toothbrush.
Maybe I'll move the HP book to LO's list.
I ordered that earlier this week "for LO". It was sold out so I figured I needed to go ahead and order now in hopes of getting it in time for Christmas.
I think I saw an HP adult coloring book on Amazon. And also a dr who one, but that's not coming out in time for Christmas.
Just now catching up! Wow I missed a lot. Both my mom and MIL insist on a list. This year will probably be stuff for the new house. Shelves for the closets A vacuum Lamps Area rugs Gift card to bed bath and beyond. Fun stuff: Some adult coloring books, Harry Potter and hunger games. Gift card to Barnes and noble
My family does a spin on the white elephant game. One person, usually me, comes up with different themes and then my BIL has this random selector algorithm thingy that secretly selects a theme and emails that theme out to each person. Some themes this year were, Death by Chocolate, Backyard Bash, The Best Kind of Therapy. I got, 'Oh to be a Kid Again'. Price limit is $25 and its up to your interpretation of what that theme means and what to buy. Then we play a game and open/steal presents as we go. Our family really gets into it and the themes make it even more fun since some people get really creative!
Since all of us are married and pretty much all have kids, we decided a while ago that we'd rather just have fun buying a themed present and playing the game. It's mostly about the kids anyways!
I agree 100%, presents for kids are presents for Mom and Dad too. And honestly if someone gave me a $25 gift card to Starbucks, I'd accept and say thank you, but would it really be that special to me? I go to Starbucks all the time and buy my coffee regardless if I pay for it or I pay with a gift card. I thought presents were supposed to be thoughtful. And another thing... if you really want something to unwrap, your child will be about 6 months on Christmas. I think we will all be helping to unwrap a present or two this year. Okay, end rant. I'll be nice the rest of the day.
@badwolf321 I am not going anywhere. Sorry to those who thought I was, its going to take a lot more to get rid of me.
periwinkledaydreams I think she is refering to things like Ipsy, Birchbox and monthly subscriptions like that. I personally get Ipsy and really like it. It allows me to try products that are normally well out of my price range. Then if you do silly little things like share your monthly bag or rate different products the company gives you different points that can be use to buy the full sized version of different products that you have tried for a discount. You can also cancel it at anytime with no fee. One of my coworkers also gets barkbox for her dogs.
Maybe this should be a new thread, but all this Christmas talk reminded me that I want to figure out gifts for my childcare providers. There are two primary teachers in Jude's room, but there are a bunch of other ladies that help out. I'm just so grateful to them because they clearly love and care about my lo. Any ideas?

For LBB's DCPs his first Christmas there, we got all of them, primary and assistants, candles with a little note thanking them for being a guiding light.
For BH this year I'm getting the two DCPs visa giftcards because both of them have had outfits completely destroyed by him (poop or spit up).
@michyme to me, a White Elephant gift is a gag gift of sorts. So something used, useless, or funny. Like one I got before was a plastic fish hanging on a wooden plaque that has a motion sensor on it, so anytime someone walks by it, the fish starts flopping, like a fish out of water, and this obnoxious song starts playing loudly.
Secret Santa, to me, is where you have 1 person where you are their "Secret Santa" and you get them a gift, or leave them daily small gifts. To me, Pollyanna is synonymous with Secret Santa.
There is also another term to throw in, called Yankee Swap...where everyone brings a present, you pick numbers from a hat, and #1 gets to choose a gift from the pile and open it. #2 can then choose to open a new gift, or steal the gift from #1, #3 can open a new gift, or steal a gift from 1 or 2, and then so on and so forth.
ETA tl;dr white elephant is a TYPE of gift, and the other terms are a way to exchange gifts. So there can be a white elephant yankee swap, or a $20 limit yankee swap. Clear as mud
What you call Yankee Swap, we call a White Elephant. Like we do a 10 dollar limit White Elephant Gift Exchange, but it is the exact game you described. Never heard of Yankee Swap lol!

When I was a DCP my favorite gifts from families were always the coffee gift cards. Like a 5 dollar Dunkin Donuts card was pretty popular and always lovely. Lol, just to bring the conversation full circle
There's never too much coffee when you're taking care of 8 babies at the same time!

Some of my favorite gifts from my students included: bath and body works, cute travel mug with a hot chocolate pack in it or a Starbucks gift card ($5, or $10), fun slipper socks, if your kids are older let them pick out a nail polish color for their teacher. One year I got a really cute Christmas themed cookie jar (SAMs club)
We decided just to start putting money away at our birthdays and Christmas (that way we actually have dates to make sure we save!) so we can save up for a big trip sometime down the road! It's more fun buying gifts for our kids now anyway. Well, and I'm a SAHM so when I want to surprise H with anything he's already paid for it ha.
Saying that, I don't know what to get DD! So will be watching you guys for ideas. we like to get them a bigger gift then small stuff from each other and Santa-not sure what to do for something big yet!
Our families still like to do gifts. And I'm 30 a week before Christmas which I guess is a big birthday lol. If I'm asked I'd suggest nice planters for outdoor flowers, or anything for camping since we bought a camper at the end of this summer! ETA-I am however Canadian therefore all the above is incredibly off season for awhile, I may be out of luck! Clothing gift cards are always winners with me too as my body has been constantly changing the last 3 years. I would not be sad if people just bought me wine
Wine, wine is an excellent gift too!!! Actually my husband made me a wine rack several years ago and filled it with wine. It's one of my favorite pieces. I'll have to find a picture. I also think I might ask for a cricut machine, maybe it will get my butt into gear to actually scrapbook.
Eta: photo (sorry if huge, mobile) One of the few times it was actually full!
I asked for a beaba babycook pro. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Think it's a waste? I'm so done with steaming one sweet potato in a huge pot and then using my mini food processor that smells like it's going to catch on fire to purée it. It's stupidly expensive but it's really the only thing I want. My MIL is going to get it for me early so I can start using it now. I told her to please not get me anything else but she won't listen. She loves playing Santa. Going to jump on the I don't expect gifts bandwagon for myself or my baby. Just not what holidays are about for me. But I love Starbucks giftcards because I only go there once in a while as a treat and it's extra fun when that treat is free!
Also there's nothing wrong with being a Yankee . Bring on the Yankee swap!!!
LO will very soon be eating what you eat, or close to it. I use the KidCo food grinder and I love it. Used it for DS1 also. And DH likes using it. Manual, fits a serving or so of food, easy to wash. I use it now for sweet potatoes and carrots, etc, but soon it will be some meat, rice, and veggies, whatever we cook for everyone else.

We got ours at a consignment sale for $30. I wouldn't buy it for the new price, too expensive for ANOTHER kitchen gadget! I haven't tried it yet, we are just getting to foods now!
What's on your wishlist this year? MIL keeps asking and I'm just like...
All I can think of for myself is an electric toothbrush and a fitbit. Basically I need y'all to tell me what I want for Christmas.
I LOVE my Fitbit. I'm on my second one. The first one fell off and I lost it outside for a few days. By the time I found it, it was dead. I would suggest the Charge HR. The band on it is more like a watch strap than just a click on strap. The chance of losing it is much lower. Plus, I like the heart rate feature. More accurate when measuring calories.
I'm asking for a jogging stroller. BF has totally wiped away my hips, butt, and legs, and I want to build those muscles back up.

Oh shit, is this the etiquette for day care? I feel bad that it didn't even cross my mind. I think there are at least four women who rotate in and out of the goldfish room...two of them I see regularly. Do you guys think I should ask the front desk how many people total rotate through there? Or just give gifts to the main two?

I would ask how many total, and who LOs "main teachers" are. I'd get something smaller for those who aren't the lead or main teachers with your child.
Wowwwww. Does that mean that another one is gone now?
Anyway,
I actually want one of those monthly subscription boxes. Just one would be great! They're like 20 bucks a month and you can choose a theme of the stuff you want so you aren't totally in the dark. Then it really is like when you were a kid!
I'm just very excited about this. I was researching them for my husband for Christmas. (Ordered two because I couldn't decide. Come to find out there are LOADS more out there. Date night, movie night, mommy boxes, baby boxes, etc.)
Any time I can get new things and not leave the house is a good day for me. Who doesn't love fun mail anyway?
Also, DH and I started getting my parents one gift on Christmas each year. Usually under 100. And it has to be unique and not something they'd buy themselves. Last year we found an SNES with about 20 games and game box thing that people would buy to put them in. They loved it. Now I gotta think of something for this year.
I want to get a subscription box for my best friend. I totally missed her bday gift this year because I'm stupid (I saw her that day and just didn't get a chance to get her anything, not even a card), so I figured I'd go big for Christmas for her. I just don't know which to pick. I'm leaning towards a book of the month type one. But I didn't know there were Mommy ones.
AFM I'm a bit disappointed this year because my sister asked that we only buy for the kids this year, because they just had baby #3. I love buying gifts for her & it kills me that I can't this year. Thankfully she's a December birthday, so she's getting a whole lot more than normal for her bday. I hope her H doesn't notice, because he's a December bday too (but extremely hard to buy for).

This is where I fall. I hate the "just for the kids" decree because I love buying/making/giving gifts. I don't even mind not getting anything myself.

This is all my siblings are. Which is why they never agree to only giving kids gifts. But it kind of sucks for me, because I have less money than them and would really prefer to only buy for the kids. Even though I love to give gifts! Of course they all say it's no big deal not to get them anything. But what kind of asshole is going to let people buy them gifts, and not return that?
Christmas is stressing me out. Both sides of the family do adult gifts still, which is nice but pretty intense. I always try & get really thoughtful gifts but I feel like its getting out of hand. DH wants me to do all the shopping but pooh-poohs everything I suggest.
Eg. His rents have difficulty financially. Ever since O was born they've been talking about buying a travel crib, highchair, some spare clothes etc but never do. Im pretty sure its the money. Also I think its wrong of me to just expect them to buy all that stuff...shit is expensive. So I suggested we buy them a travel crib & some spare baby bits & bobs for their house for xmas. H got really, like really offended & made out that I was an asshole for "getting them something for our kid". I don't understand spending the same money on pointless tat when I know they'll need it & I'll have to buy it anyway.
Am I actually just being a dick?
You're not being a dick. But DH can't tell you to do the shopping and then nix whatever you decide. Since it's his family, I would let him make the call, but now it's his job to do the shopping.

Understood which is why I'm finally giving into it. What if you suggested a secret Santa with spending limit so they get their kicks by shopping for someone, but you won't have to spend so much $?
Eta: I forgot this until after I hit send! One of my friends and her siblings last year made it a rule that they had to make their gifts to each other. This might be a viable option for you too.

Girl, I've suggested both of those things. Nope. They just repeat that I should do whatever I want but they're sticking with the same routine. I'm pretty sure the tradition of it is the most important thing...Whatever at this point! Maybe I WILL make all my stuff or just buy cheaper stuff this year.

Well that just plain sucks. I say just make them things. If you're a great baker, you could do a plate of cookies and a mug of hot cocoa. Dollar stores always have mugs.
