I don't want to sound dumb haha but I just have known too many families who are religious with the flu shot and they are sick all the time! To each their own, only people know themselves. If I were getting sick or getting the flu often then I would definitely reconsider...

I do not get the flu shot either. I am a teacher and it is highly recommended for me, but I haven't gotten it or the flu for 10 years. I don't want to give it to LO this year as we should be just about out of the season by the time he can have it. I am not sure for the future.
I did not get the flu shot this year because I forgot. I got the flu. Also, I do not think the phrase "to each their own" applies when you are talking about vaccines and protecting the health of a community.

Same as above. I didn't get the flu shot and I got the flu. It was awful especially bc LO had RSV at the same time. I will be getting my flu shot from now on.
annapunkalunka I just wonder if getting all these shots (flu) is anything like when you hear ppl who have taken too many antibiotics or meds in general and their bodies no longer respond the same. I am very grateful we have all these modern medicines but think they are overused and no long last resorts.
And my understanding is some ppl can get the flu or flu like symptoms with the vaccine. It weakens the immune system soon after.
Do you have any scientific evidence to back up these claims? Are you just guessing?

I seriously cannot understand how people in this day and age can still believe the flu shot causes the flu. JFC please read some actual medical journals and articles and not listen to some blog poster pushing their own agenda. (Oh I'm sure next you are gonna tell me the cdc is conspiring against the population. Just stop)
The shot DOES NOT cause the fucking flu.
Oh and I got the chicken pox vaccine the first year it came out. My titre has been tested and I'm still immune. If you are concerned about vaccines not working or "expiring" in you get your titre's tested to determine what you are immune to.
Yes, I am judging very hard the people who doubt the effectiveness of vaccines helping the greater population. If you don't want to vaccinate yourself or your kids keep them the fuck away from mine.

If antibiotics don't work, it's not because of "your body not responding". It's because the pathogen or microorganism causing the infection is resistant to the antibiotic. This resistance can be acquired by the pathogen through a patient's previous exposure to antibiotics but sometimes it's just a characteristic of the strain prevalent in the population (e.g., CA MRSA).
A vaccine will not have any effect on an antibiotic. Futhermore, vaccines prevent viruses. And, as you probably know, viruses are treated mostly with symptomatic and supportive care but also with antiviral medications. Antibiotics are used for infections. That is partly why the flu is so deadly. The antivirals used for the flu work to decrease the severity of the disease and do not rid your body of the virus like an antibiotic rids your body of infection.
Much of my work is in infectious disease so I love talking about antibiotics ands stuff.
ETA: I have gotten the flu shot annually for over 10 years and have never had the flu or anything like it.

Lastly, the flu and a cold are not one and the same. I have had the flu exactly 2 times in my entire life. It was fucking horrible. I was bedridden and lost significant amounts of weight in a two week span.
I get colds several times per year as do most people. Saying someone who gets the flu shot is "sick all the time" is so naive and full of misinformation.

It's under the "side effects" of the shot I know it doesn't CAUSE the flu, but flue like symptoms
And just to clarify I am just talking about the flu shot not other shots

Where does the religious part come into the effectiveness of the flu vaccine? Did we cover this already?

FFFC: This is the first year I've gotten the flu shot and it was because of LO. For me, it's just not been worth it and I've been willing to make the gamble. I'm generally very healthy and have never gotten the flu, at least since childhood, and as a healthy adult I'm not likely to have anything worse than a couple of weeks of misery. It's a risk but a fairly small one. That said, I honestly never thought about the flu shot in terms of protection of others (vulnerable populations) despite totally understanding herd immunity and the importance of immunization for other things. I think it's partially because sometimes the flu vaccine seems laughably ineffective compared to most other vaccines but partially it's just an unexplainable lack of ever having the thought cross my mind. This year I thought about it because of LO and realized I'd kind of been an idiot. I've resolved to be more responsible moving forward.

I'm guilty of this too. Last year was my first year to get the shot because I was pregnant. I never even thought about getting it for those around me. Two years ago, H got the flu, and I stayed with him for the week he had it but never got it. My doctor was amazed and said I was really lucky. But after seeing him get it, I understand that it is really severe even for someone who's generally healthy.
Do you guys put the flu shot and other vaccines (mmr, tetanus, hep B) in the same categories? To me, it's not as big of a deal if LO misses a flu shot but you can bet your sweet ass she will be getting all of the vaccines for the big scary stuff. Am I off base here?
I am pro vax. LO is up to date on all his shots. I have just never gotten the flu shot. I have a super strong immune system. It has been several years since I have had more than a minor cold. And I teach middle school which is a complete germ fest!
Maybe it's the super immune system I built up from being around every snotty kid in the classroom, but I'm guilty too of skipping the flu shot. I can't even remember the last time I had a cold. They made me get a flu shot when I was pregnant because I was in a high risk category. Now that I have LO who will be in a high risk group for a while I will continue to get one. I was never in direct contact with a special population before so it never was really an issue.

Just because you "have a super strong immune system" doesn't mean you can't pass the flu virus along to others.
Vaccine debates make me ragey. I wish I could let you ladies at some people on my facebook. Several don't vaccinate because "the government is conspiring against us with the ingredients used in vaccines." Fucking morons.

Ugh I get so worked up over this. I saw an article the other day that said the reason there's a measles outbreak isn't so much because the kids aren't vaccinated, it's more because they eat Oreos and watch too much TV. Yup, that sounds right.

This is me. In the area I live, I am willing to bet that the vast majority don't get the flu vaccine. It is just kind of the culture about it here, not that I am saying that's okay.
