What Silicon Valley Thinks About Women

Has anyone else read this article? Newsweek typically falls into a TL:DR category for me, but this one hits close to home. It's in my backyard - location wise and career wise. And it just makes me sad. And see a lot of those same traits in myself.

Interesting article.

I work in the IT/tech field, but it's for the government. We don't have a culture of "brogrammers" there, thankfully, probably because it's not about making money, coming up with the next "groundbreaking" app, etc.

I sometimes wish I could be a fly on the wall at some of these startups or at Google or whatever. I bet many of the conversations are priceless.

If you've never watched the HBO series Silicon Valley, I totally recommend it. Obviously done up for TV, but not too far off base.

I advise a tech program that has a stated goal of encouraging more women to enroll - we're currently at about 30%, which is more than computer science, but even the women in our program are struggling with sexist language and behavior exhibited by their male peers. Our program committee had a meeting yesterday to talk about what we can do to increase gender diversity in the major, but really, it comes down to changing the culture, which is going to be a slow and arduous process.
