TTMA Retinol while Trying to Conceive

It's a slow day and I'm alone with my thoughts. I know that retinol isn't good for people who are pregnant. Is it also something I should avoid while trying to conceive? My doctor never mentioned it, but she's REALLY laid back.

Just curious what others are doing related to the all-important topic of anti-wrinkle cream!

Have you changed your routine to avoid Retinol?

Any products that you would recommend?

I was using a prescription adapalene gel (a retinoid) to treat my acne. My PCP said I should not use it while trying to conceive. It's been a year and a half that I'm off of it, and my skin is awful, but I don't feel comfortable using it after hearing that.

I don't feel the same way about OTC face creams containing retinol. I imagine the concentration is much lower. With the prescription stuff, my face peels and is super sensitive to sun. I've never noticed a regular anti-wrinkle cream doing either of those.

Both my OBGYN and my dermatologist told me not to take retinoids while TTC. My dermatologist refuses to prescribe them knowing that we are trying.

She prescribed me metrocream (a topical antibiotic) in the meantime (for acne) and told me I could come in for microdermabrasion or some kind of UV treatment. I just use the cream and that's it.

Thanks, notagoddess and ironbaby! I am glad to hear that you received actual advice from legit medical professionals on this. I think I'll just phase out my retinol moisturizer and find a natural alternative. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

My derm also said no retinols while TTC and doing fertility treatments. She said to "come back when I'm done having kids." Um, ok? I guess she is taking the better safe than sorry route.

I avoid it in general right now, but I wanted to throw out there that I really like Yes To Blueberries anti-aging line and it is lacking in quite a few of the more questionable ingredients in skincare. I use it more for preventative purposes than active anti-wrinkle action but the night cream gets good reviews all around!

This is so timely since I was just this morning talking to my friend who is an esthetician. So she's obviously not a doctor but she said retinoids can stay in your system for 6 months. So I'm not going to be using my Retin-A for my acne anymore.

My dermatologist stopped prescribing as soon as i said I was going off of the pill, regardless of starting TTC. He gave me a script for finacea, and wants me to call him when I GKU to decide if that will be continued.

I also had a few rounds of accurate years ago, I read enough of that literature and saw enough heart breaking pictures to not mess around

Yeah, I have had two courses of accutane in the past, and that definitely was all the convincing I needed to stay away from retinol.
