What did you think the nature of the look that Luke gave Rey was? He looked almost...angry?

I know a lot of people are speculating that she is his daughter, but it was such an intriguing way to end the movie. He made no movement whatsoever to take that lightsaber.

I was actually impressed with how mark hamill looked. Of the 3.. You knew Harrison ford would look best. But in the 90s when hamill was doing a lot of cameos he looked terrible. The beard and long hair helped him out a lot I think.

I definitely think Ray is his daughter. Although, if you've heard or have a different theory, I'd love to hear it. I also sensed anger. I think he'll end up training her in the next movie.

Can we also talk about what you thought of the movie overall? I fucking loved it. I wasn't let down at all.

I heard a theory that Rey and Ben were siblings like Leia and Luke. Put two different places for sir protection.

Rogue that would make sense. I did think the Ben and Han Solo scene was super predictable, but I didn't see Ford wanting to be in this new series of movies (beyond this one) anyway.

I liked the actress who played Rey a lot and I believe it was her first movie - she did waaaay better than Hayden Christensen as Anakin (horrible actor in that role IMO).

I initially thought Rey was Han Solo & Leia's daughter b/c of how familiar she was with the Millennium Falcon. But then when she was "drawn" to Luke's saber and chatted with Maz, I figured she might be Luke's daughter - Ren's cousin? Either way, can't wait until episode VIII!!!

As far as Mark Hamill goes - I think he was in a horrible accident back in the day right? Either after episode IV or b/w V and VI...that's why he never really looked the same.

YAHHHSSSS. Ok first let's set the stage a bit. I'm one of the worst Star Wars nerds you could possibly imagine. When I first saw the movie, at age 6, I was so captivated by the music that I made it my life's intention to become a film music composer right then and there. And indeed that's what I do now In middle school, I was super nerdy. Like, winning spelling bees, piano competitions, braces, acne, etc - and I had no friends. So I would come home from school on a Friday afternoon and watch Episode IV. Then on Saturday night, I'd watch Episode V. On Sunday afternoons I'd wrap the weekend up with Return of the Jedi. And I did this for THREE YEARS until I finally started coming out of my shell a bit. I also got heavily into what's called the Expanded Universe - all the novels, comics, etc that took the stories and characters and went forward. I wanted the Force to be real, so badly. I would sit under a tree in winter with no coat attempting to use the force to warm myself. I wasn't too terribly disappointed with the prequels at the time they came out, then hated them, and have no come full circle to see their value and appreciate that George Lucas actually did put a lot of time and effort into drawing distinct parallels between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy. Plus, John Williams has continued to turn in the most gorgeous amazing scores for all 6 movies and especially his score for Episode 7 did NOT disappoint and in fact exceeded my expectations.

So! All of that being said, and all of nerdery exposed - I FUCKING LOVED IT AS WELL!

What's interesting is that even though the creators announced that they were throwing out all the Expanded Universe storylines, in that canon, Han and Leia did have twins, both force-sensitive, called Jacen and Jaina. I wish I could see Rey's flashback again right now and pause it at certain moments! I feel like there were so many juicy clues to her backstory there, but it just happened so fast!

Exactly! Harrison Ford has been begging George Lucas to kill the character off since Return of the Jedi!

I read someone's theory that she had flown the Falcon before - hence how she tells Finn it's a garbage ship, she had some familiarity with it and had probably tinkered with it or maybe even stolen it before. I LOVED how they really sold the physicality of piloting that ship with how hard she was straining to fly it! 

In between Episodes IV and V Mark Hamill did have a terrible car accident and shattered his nose and cheekbone. You can really see the difference in his features in Empire, especially.

Did any of you guys have the entire saga playing in your local theaters as a marathon? There were talks about it in theaters near us but they said it was up to management. The kids working the box office was really trying to champion it though! That would've been neat to see! I'd only seen I-III (and now VII) in the theater.

Hahah you are completely a true nerd. I dislike the nerd Olympics!!!

Depends on which characters you mean! George Lucas created all of the original characters, and then the EU characters were all created with his blessing by various writers throughout the years. The new ones from TFA, like Rey, Finn, and Poe are brand new creations of JJ Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, Kathleen Kennedy, etc. There is some confusion over the origins of Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren, but I believe he's also a new creation.

I am pretty sure when Star Wars made the move from George to Disney that Disney said the only thing they considered cannon was the movies and animated series.

That means all expanded universe stuff is thrown out. Which some of it was really good!

frodabaggins, I stumbled across a YouTube video about "what if episode 1 were good?" Made by belated media. You might like it! He did episodes 2 and 3 and I feel like he's a decent story teller.

Also, can i be nit picky for a minute? Not being negative - the movie was awesome, but let's talk semantics here. The weapon thing was a bit strange. 1) They show Fin watching a planet blow up during the day like it's the clearest thing in the sky. That would imply that these planets are incredibly close together and both habitable. They also show the laser moving like a missile toward the planet, but if it's traveling at hyper speed, no one could see that because it's moving faster than the speed of light. That's my only nit pick and yes, I know it's a movie. lol

I COMPLETELY REMEMBER YOU!!!! that's so awesome

Rey...man, I just don't know what to think. Before the movie, I really did think, based on everything from the mirrored positioning of Rey and Ren on the poster to various hints the stars dropped in interviews, that we would have a parallel thing to both the EU Jacen/Jaina Solo and Luke/Leia. Twins, possibly even twins that had to be separated at birth for their safety. Then the movie happened. There are a few things that make me feel like she AT LEAST related to the Skywalker/Solo clan in some way - everyone's reaction to "the girl", especially Kylo. her flashback - it does appear that she was trained as a child, and that partially explains her becoming so good with the Force so quickly? Kylo Ren's seeming familiarity with her - did they know each other as children? IS SHE Luke's daughter and if so, who is her mother? In the EU, Luke had a child with Mara Jade who was an all around badass and much beloved EU character. 

As far as the EU stuff goes, I would start with where it says "2.3 Rebellion Era" on this list of the books: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_books

My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Star Wars EU book is called "The Courtship of Princess Leia." PLEASE tell me if you end up reading this one, it's so fantastic

I can mostly only vouch for the books as I am not a big comic book reader or video game player. I also highly recommend the "Clone Wars" animated series on Netflix. 

I also didn't understand the physics of the Starkiller base! I thought it was an incredibly powerful and moving way to show this terrible godawful murder of billions of people and a whole system of planets, but I was pretty sure it wasn't making much science-sense! ha!

frodabaggins, Ugh, John Williams and this soundtrack! It kills me. And pregnant? Forget it. I never got into Star Wars (it was a point of pride that I hadn't seen any of it it until I was 20), but married a super-geek (although Star Wars is not his top geek thing), and then we had kids who now love Star Wars. So when we saw the first trailer in the movie theatre a while back and the theme started, I ugly cried like whoa. Same yesterday when we finally saw the movie (without the kids). Each time someone from the original movie came onscreen, cry. I will blame pregnancy hormones (but that is a lie). ;-)

So I loved it, but I have to say I was *really* distracted by Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. I know him from "Girls," and once I realized that, I couldn't think of much else. I thought the casting for Rey and Finn (and for the other baddies) was great. That one was just tough for me.

Ha! I also know him from Girls, and absolutely 100% LOVE him in Girls, but recently had the opportunity to see a few other movies he's in and kiiiind of fell in love with him. So I was able to disassociate him from the character of Adam on Girls, and I LOVED his performance as Kylo Ren, thought it was incredible and complex and super emotional.

Overall I loved it! I really liked how it felt like a natural extension of the original three, and not some over the top new thing. (Full disclosure: I haven't seen any of the "new" prequel ones). Also, I totally agree about Harrison Ford. I've had a little thing for him since the 80s (I heart Indiana Jones too).

But what about Carrie Fischer? Yeesh! I didn't realize she was in such rough shape.
