A measles outbreak is being traced to Disneyland. Where it is first being reported as diagnosed in my city is the same building as our pedi. Blurgh.
ETA according to the news, only 1 of the 10 people diagnosed here were vaccinated.
A woman in one of the FB moms group has a 6 mo old who went to the same pedi on the same day as one of the unvaxed kids. Because her kid is unvaxed (too young) and was exposed, she has to keep him quarantined for the full incubation of 28 days. That means taking a full month off work. I would be so angry. (Not to mention the actual irresponsibility of someone exposing my baby to measles)

Wow. Just wow. How incredibly careless of those parents for exposing others to serious illnesses. Restitution should be made.

Ugh. The non vaxxing thing drives me nuts. I'm on a natural parenting group for my area and some of them were complaining that they couldn't find a pedi that would take both them and their insurance once they find out they don't vaccinate. Um, could it be that the pedi doesn't want to harm his other patients due to your stupidity???

It's such a mess. I realize we can't keep our kids in a bubble or police if international visitors to Disney have been vax but choosing to not vax "because the disease isn't around anymore"? Yeah, it's not around because of herd immunity!

If I were a ped I would be using vaccine refusal as an earmarker for "total pita I don't want to deal with." There is a lot to be said for peds who do take these patients and work to educate them, but oof, what a headache.
It's a shame, but I fear docs may have to start legal paperwork stating that they reserve the right to refuse treatment if children are unvaccinated to preserve the health and welfare of their current patient populations.
Yes, I've treated patients with vax side effects- Guillaume Barre syndrome - and it rendered a marathon runner into a weak kitten on a ventilator with a trach. Those are uncommon.
I was actually banned from a FB group that I didn't know was heavily anti-vax because I expressed that the polio vaccine is good because polio is not eradicated.

I found my pediatrician (ok, family doctor) by asking if they took non vax patients. Anyone who said yes, I crossed off my list.
My crunchy Montessori school requires vaccination or doctor note as to medical reason to not. Because a number of parents and teachers have children who are too young to vaccinate. Public schools have a pertussis outbreak yearly. So far, we've avoided that.
My mom is anti-vax (now, not when I was a kid) and she sent me this ridiculous article about how autism rates are going to jump to 1:2 in the next 15 years because of Roundup. Besides the absurdity of that, half the article was about the autism related dangers of vaccines. I normally just roll my eyes and move along when my mom sends me this stuff. But this just pissed me off. So I wrote a strongly worded email about the dangers of the pseudoscience behind that article and the record rates of whooping cough both in her state and mine, as well as a link to the Penn and Teller video about vaccines. She replied by sending a link to a cute video about spoiled kids who were excited to get a banana for Christmas and that she is grateful for all the time that she gets to spend with her grandbabies. I think about that exchange regularly and while my email was harsh, I don't regret sending it and I still feel the same way.

I was reading a study that was done recently about methods of education for anti vaxxers. It had very aggressive methods (showing children who had gotten the diseases, etc) to very gentle methods of education. The kicker is that every single method of education actually led anti vac parents to become MORE entrenched in their beliefs. It's like fucking quicksand, the more you struggle the faster you sink.

My mom is kind of a hippy nutcase and has her doubts about the flu shot and chicken pox and stuff like that. She follows a lot of the woo woo news sources etc. but she is absolutely horrified by the idea of someone not vaccinating their kid for polio.

I don't know if I would like to have a crazy hippie family, or stick with my Fox news watching, gun toting, PNW redneck family. I mean, as is they judge me for some of the things I do and feel passionate about, mostly because I'm the "hippiest" of the bunch. However, I'm also not that much of a "hippie". Sure, if they want to eye roll over my BWI group, or my reusable grocery bags and cloth diapers, or that we like to buy organic over regular, and don't bathe our children in J&J. Whatever, it's me being a well educated consumer for a lot of it. It's something that just boggles my mind. Why roll your eyes and give me crap for me doing the research for what is the healthiest for my children?
I'm a hipster, but being a hipster and hippie are pretty one and the same here in Seattle.
Interesting. Different here. At least in attire.
See, I'm in Seattle. Other than Portland it's like the mecca for hipsters. I'm also on the younger side. So, I stuff my fat ass into skinny jeans, drink my pretentious latte, all while I eat organic, and wear my overly large dark rimmed glasses while listening to Hozier. Bring. it. on.
