I had a maya ring sling with DD, it was beautiful....but honestly didn't love it. I never managed to get the weight distribution right I think, and I didn't like so much weight on the one shoulder. It also never felt as secure, so I only ever used it around the house.
I should mention I got it after already using the Ergo which just felt so much more secure in comparison. Though the ring sling wins for sitting down, way more comfortable in that department.

Let's talk about the newborn period. I'm a city dweller and expect to carry a lot. So far I've only read what Lucie's list has to say. I worry about the single shoulder problem with the ring slings. Can't bear the thought of wraps - I'm so ridiculously uncoordinated and want something I can grab and grow easily. Thoughts about K'tan?
I loved using a ring sling. I actually made mine, but it was from the directions on sleeping baby productions. She also sells slings, which I've heard great things about (www.sleepingbaby.net).

I used an ergo with the infant insert and a Moby wrap the last time around for the newborn phase. The Moby was perfect because it was still late winter/early spring and very chilly. As it got warmer I just dressed DS lighter, this time I'm thinking about a ring sling since it will be warmer. I still have both my ergo and my Moby, I also have an osanaburg wrap that's like a size 7, but light weight. I have a Beco toddler for DS and he still loves the closeness of being worn at almost 2 years old.
frecklesnbrains I had DS in an ergo with the insert in FL, in summer. It wasn't too bad but I wasn't wearing him for long or it was inside with air conditioning.
I will use my Tula mostly after he doesn't need an insert. Also because come fall, I can wear it with the coat I made to match! I finished this last spring and then it warmed up and I couldn't wear it anymore.

I've been out of touch for a bit with traveling for work and holidays, but I just wanted to put my vote in for a few carriers.
K'tan for newborn (but never tried a sling) Ergo for 3 months to 18 months Then Tula toddler
If I could do it all again, i'd just get the Tula and use an infant insert (which I have for #2!). But if I were someone who didn't plan to babywear after infancy, the ergo is great.
I love my Ergo. We used it from 15 pounds through age 3.75 hiking at Yosemite this fall!
Before that, we had an Infantino Flip that was fine for the super infant stage, but not comfortable once DS was over 15 pounds. However, it was the same price as the Ergo infant insert so, it was a good intro to carriers to see if we even liked it before spending $100+. I didn't want anything super expensive at first, anything that was complicated to put on (lots of straps and wrapping), and the ring slings didn't seem very secure to me so I wasn't comfortable in it.

sandandsea oooh, I'm definitely looking for a good carrier for hiking! We may splurge and get a hardcore carrier/backpack combo so we can do long hikes and maybe even backpack with LO, but that will be a decision for later...

We have a Thule. Sadly we didn't get around to using it as much as I would have liked this summer thanks to new jobs and big exams. Hopefully next summer!

I was in the airport a few years ago when I saw a woman carrying twins who were around 9 months old in one of those hiking baby backpack things. This looked like the greatest contraption ever because the babies were in there stadium seat style, so they could both see. I helped her re-adjust one of them in there and when she took off walking again both babies smiled and giggled in unison. From that day forward, I decided I should take up hiking so that I can make a baby smile like that in one of those things! /useless anecdote

Bumping to say I went to a Baby wearing international meeting yesterday, and it was great! I was not considering a wrap, because I thought it would be too complicated. But trying it out, it wasn't hard and was the most comfy. Definitely worth a visit! It's not a formal thing, no presentation or anything, you show up and chat. DH and I spent an hour trying on all kinds of newborn carriers and learning about things like how to nurse in them.
Also, for $30 a year, you can borrow their carriers like library books. Out for as long as you want, exchange for a new one when you want, and you have access to carriers costing waaaaay more than $30. Definitely recommend if you aren't certain which carrier you want to actually purchase.

Thanks! I really want to do this! Our local BWI mtgs are at terrible times though - I'm so disappointed. Why on earth they seem to only be scheduled midday on weekdays is totally infuriating to me... It's like saying I can't babywear unless I'm a SAHM.

Okay, end rant.
I know, I remember you saying this. Mine was luckily at 7pm, but while I was there I think I figured out why so many are during the day--people bring their babies and young kids, and I bet a lot of them have 7 or 8 bedtimes. Factoring in bedtime routines and travel, there's not a lot of time for a 2-hour meeting, particularly if rush hour is a concern.
I'm sorry there aren't good options for you, you'd think in an area like Boston there'd be at least one.

Yeah, a weekend meeting would be great - for both the young kids and the working moms. There's one that meets on weekends once a month but it's a long drive from here. We may try it anyway. It's just annoying to have to drive an hour when there are 3 mtgs less than 15 minutes away from my house that I could go to if I were free at say... 11am on a Wednesday.
Perhaps it's just the beginning of the world making me feel guilty for being a working mom.
frecklesnbrains, there are SO many things that are geared toward SAHMs that irritate the crap out of me! Moms groups, kiddie classes, you name it. The few weekend options that are available fill up so quickly that you would think these places would realize that the working-parent crowd needs more options. I approve of your rant!

This is unfortunately the truth. I tried to join a mom's group about a year ago and I was rejected because I'm not a SAHM...
And to clarify, I have nothing but respect for SAHMs. It's the organizations that only offer weekday options during typical working hours that drive me batty. Our local trampoline place has a kids jump twice a week where the little kids can jump without a bunch of older kids around. G loves going so I called to ask if they would consider offering a weekend kids jump, even it was only once a month - nope!

Boo. That's shitty. We'll just for a virtual working mom's group right here on J16! We want you!!!
I've got both a Moby and an Ergo. The Moby was great when DD was a newborn but so complicated to wrap at the same time. But I liked it. I got an Ergo when DD was a bit older (like 3 months) and I've used it ever since. Love the Ergo. It's been so handy to have. Now looking at options for a ring sling for the new LO. Any suggestions? I want something with minimal fabric and easy to use. I'm going to try to stay away from dragging the carseat everywhere but not sure how successful I'll be with that.

I bought my first wrap and I'm ridiculously excited! Can't wait for it to get here so I can try it out Also, I can see myself going down the rabbit hole of spending way too much money if I end up liking wrapping (which I have a feeling I will since I liked the Moby when DD was little). So many pretty wraps to choose from. I reigned myself in this time and got a Little Frog I found for <$100
