Allow me to interrupt our normal scheduled threads to bring something else up. There has been recent news that a Japanese Journalist has been beheaded by the terrorists ISIS. There are still other in their custody (Americans) that ISIS seems to be asking for ransom for. The US answer is "we do not negotiate with terrorists", but they did a negotiation before (not with ISIS) for a Military Sergeant. I agree with not negotiating with terrorists, but I'm worried as to how many more will die (not just Americans).

I think there are independent companies with work with the families to handle these ransoms. I prefer that over the U.S. government ever answering these kind of demands.

Yes the prospect of the US answeri.g to then is not ideal.
First, ISIS is fucking disgusting and they all deserve to die.
But, there is a lot going on behind the scenes that the media and the general public do not and should not know about. It's hard for me to form a good opinion about what I think should happen when I know we don't have all the details. I'm sure hands are tied somewhat because of how sensitive things are. I wish someone could go in there and totally eliminate every single member of ISIS and their supporters (and every other terrorist in the world), but I know that's not possible.
My potentially flame worthy opinion is that I think a lot of the time, the US government is more concerned with being politically correct than they should be.

I agree ISIS is disgusting and they need to be handled.
Also the public not knowing a lot of things is good but also puts us in a position where we are left to have opinions on the little bit of information that is given to us and the upsetting information leaked by ISIS.

Just a correction on the Bowe Bergdahl negotiation alluded to in the original post. I believe he is considered a Prisoner of War and at the time we were in the process of unwinding the war so it is not the same as negotiating with terrorists.
From what was stated by the White House "They negotiated because the group we're a different type of terrorists". Not considered the same.

This is kind of how I feel about the whole situation. The public shouldn't know everything, but then we do form opinions on limited information, which obviously is not the whole story. I feel like I am not informed enough to have an opinion if information is being withheld from us.
But ISIS is both terrifying and disgusting at the same time. I am not sure the "correct" way to handle them. I don't even think our government knows the right course of action.

I like that the US won't negotiate. If terrorists (or kidnappers, or whatever) knew they could get a ransom out of the US, they would kidnap more Americans. Esp because US is one of the richest countries in the world. I think that stance protects more Americans than it harms.

Gee, what a shock. You're right, of course. It's either that or our government simply doesn't care.
It's disturbing to me how little public outcry there is over the atrocities committed by ISIS. Where are the graphic FB images intended to shock us into action (not that I want to see them, but that seems to be what people on FB generally do)? Where are the petitions to the government spamming my inbox? We should be much more worried about them than we are.
