We're going on a cruise that stops in Mexico in a few weeks. If this medicated cycle works I will be 5-6 weeks pregnant. Mom is terrified, I'm only slightly concerned. We will be there for about 8 hours and be leaving before dusk. We won't be spending any time in the rainforest/wooded areas while in Cozumel so I'm not too worried.

This sounds like a nasty virus though!
We are also going on a cruise in three weeks that stops in Cozumel and are actively TTC as well (although we're not starting treatment with the RE until my March cycle). I'm not too worried either but I'm thinking I may just stay on the ship for that stop to be safe.

Not to stir up fear, but the mosquito (aedes aegypti) that transmits the Zika virus is highly active during the daytime, and is considered an "aggressive" biter. It isn't limited to dusk/night, or wooded areas.
Please wear mosquito repellent even during daytime hours!
Hey everyone, not pregnant, but I live in Honduras. Consequences of Zika virus are super scary, but odds of getting it, especially while wearing repellent are very slim. Travelling to these places gives you bigger chances of getting food poisoning (because of bad water or people cooking with bad water, so yes, don't eat street food and don't drink anything with water or ice that you don't know where it comes from), than getting chikungunya or Zika virus. If you are getting back from these places or need to go, just wear the repellent and take the logical precautions. Enjoy your trips!
I am 20w pregnant and have two weekend trips scheduled to the Caribbean in the coming months; one to a country on the affected list (Puerto Rico) and another to an Island which is not on the list. I still plan to attend both trips but I will be using DEET regularly and will likely treat my clothing with Permethrin.

Not pregnant, but in the middle of IF treatments and DH and I have tickets to Puerto Rico for the middle of February. I wonder if I should ask my RE what she thinks...

Not pregnant either plan to do the embryo transfer in April and we were planning to go to the Bahamas in mid March. We are debating whether or not to book our flights. I'll probably ask my RE.
Just saw on local news that it has been reported in Florida and Illinois.
Yikes!
Just to clarify - the infection didn't originate in these states, the pregnant women had travelled to infected countries. It can't be transmitters person-to-person.
ETA: wanted to clarify to prevent panic :-)
Correct, but if a mosquito bites these infected people and moves on, there it starts. Although, I'd expect Illinois to be least likely to spread it this time of year lol.

My RE said we should not to go the Bahamas in mid March, stay away until this all clears up.
Eeek, I didn't think the Bahamas was on the list of countries to avoid. I'm TTC right now (technically OTB this cycle though) and heading to the Bahamas next week. It's for work, so there's no way I'll get out of it.

FWIW, my RE said it was fine to go on our planned trip to Puerto Rico in February while in treatment. Had our most recent FET been successful she would have recommended canceling.

summergirl1211, be sure to wear insect repellent and use long sleeves!

It is not on the list of countries to avoid right now. Our RE wanted us to be extra careful since we are doing IVF & PGS. I've been going every March for 6 years I've never seen a mosquito or got bit by one, but in my case I'd rather be safe than sorry.
My husband and I were hoping to go on a 4 day cruise at the end of February when I'll be 16-17 weeks. It would depart Miami & go to Cococay, Bahamas (the cruise's island), Nassau (I would stay on the ship) & Key West. I need to decide by Jan 30. As far as I know Bahama area is safe but who knowsss. Are mosquitoes out in the middle of the ocean? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I just mostly associate them with being on land
The article I read said they had recently traveled out of the country. I think all of the cases in the US are due to traveling still.
I'm not sure on the exact mechanics, but the disease can be transferred from a mosquito biting an infected individual, getting the virus and then transmitting it to the next person it bites...I'm just concerned for when the weather warms and there is person-to-person tranmissionn here. Yikes.
That being said, apparently the CDC is estimating it won't make its way to Canada...so, there's that!

They are saying it won't make it to Canada because the mosquito carrying the virus is not native to the area.
I'm not minimizing the precaution but after reading this I realized that I never saw a single mosquito in Puerto Rico on either of our trips. We didn't bring repellent and DH and DD are mosquito magnets so I am sure they would have been bitten. We spent a full day in the rainforest last trip too.
We live in TN and the mosquitoes are so so bad here in summer. But travel to a rainforest, no problem!
