I posted on the Bump about my in-home DC switching to half-days only in June. DH and I toured a couple DC centers and also spoke to his parents about using their nanny.
The DC centers were nice, none of them wow-ed me, and the menus were mediocre. My IL are very on board with us using their nanny. They said she can do pickup all 5 days a week, but 3 days she would take DD back to my IL's house and 2 days she would take her back to our house. This is NBD, they live 5 min away from us. We offered to pay, but they said they don't want us to, so we would be looking a saving $600 a month since we will only be paying for 1/2 day DC.
My DD will be 2 in June. In terms of education/school prep, a friend who uses our current DCP with her older son was very happy with what he was learning and I don't think we would be getting any advantage by switching to a center. Most of the centres didn't seem to be at capacity so if something suddenly changed and we needed full time care we could probably get a spot with minimal wait.
DH and I are both leaning towards the 1/2 day DC with nanny picking up, but I haven't make a final decision, and I would love some more input from you wonderful ladies.
Pros (to 1/2 day and nanny pickup): Get to stay with wonderful DCP we love. Save $600 a month (this is huge for us, we are not in debt but we struggle to add to our retirement savings). I get to continue to make DD's lunch and load it up with all the veggies DCP can get her to eat things she refuses at home sometimes.
Cons: I will still need to do some coordinating, my mom will want to do pickup sometimes, so even though the nanny will be available 5 days a week, there will be days that I need to sort out who is doing pickup and make sure everyone is on the same page. I will probably give my mom a day that is her's and just let the nanny know when she can't do her day. We will need to switch to a school when she is 3 (centres would have the option to continue into preschool). right now DD is good with naps when she's at my IL, but don't know if that will continue to be the case.
