We have two credit cards and use them only for the purpose of accumulating airline miles. I have a chase card through United and MH has a Southwest card. We have been able to get quite a few "free" tickets. If you want the freedom to fly various airlines, I'm pretty sure there are other cards that are not limited to a specific airline.
We have been using a Chase card for years, we actually accumulate Marriott points which can be redeemed for miles. We have gotten quite a few free domestic flights and not had any trouble redeeming/converting points.
I used to be very anti credit card but came around once MH showed me we can use it responsibly and make it work for us (free flights/hotels).
Anyway, I highly recommend Chase. They have been very easy to work with as far as points redemption and customer service.
I like Chase Sapphire and Amex Everyday. When I signed up for the Amex Everyday, they offered Amazon Prime for a year and $200 cash back. I don't like screwing around with airline miles with credit cards, so I always get the cash back or Amazon credit.
Another vote for Amex. I get Hilton points (and all of the Hilton family hotels) and love it. Amex customer service is top-notch. My account somehow got stolen and not only did they notify me, they overnighted another card.
DH has a Visa through our bank that does cash back. It's nice, but his card was stolen the same time as mine and he had to wait about a week for the new one.
We put pretty much everything on our cards and just pay the balance in full every month. He does a transfer since it's with our bank and I just use online bill pay. Never heard of PayPal for credit cards.
DH likes to pay for things with Paypal that he can't pay for directly with a CC, since you can load your PP account with cards bought using a CC. If your card has good enough rewards, it's well worth the $3.95 fee. He's been to Asia on miles and hotel points twice in the last 2 years. He should run seminars.
Anyhow I like my Chase Freedom card and I have a bunch of others, but signing up for them was really based on getting a good promotion. There are blogs all about maximizing points (Mommy points, the points guys, etc.) and they'll usually tell you if it's a worthwhile promo or not.
Amex. We put virtually everything on it every month (daycare, groceries, gas, Costco, you name it)and then we can use the points for travel or Amazon purchases or whatever. We usually wind up with at least one free plane ticket or its monetary equivalent each year, and the additional protections are worth their weight in gold. A few years ago we had an issue with a brand new Samsung dishwasher going kaput and Samsung refusing to honor the warranty - Amex stepped in, dealt with Samsung directly and refunded us the total purchase price.
We're going to St. Maarten at the end of the month and we're paying for half the trip with points.
Another vote for Amex. We pay the annual fee for Platinum, but it's refunded b/c DH is military. As Shan said, the concierge service is terrific and really helpful. The Platinum (and I believe gold, as well) gets you access to various airport clubrooms, which we use. I believe you also receive a $200 annual credit to use towards airline-related fees (checked bagged, flying pets, etc).
