We had all hard floors in our first house. I love hard floors but it became a pain when we had DS and there were no carpeted areas to play on and he would hit his head on the floor a ton. Personally for me with having young kids I would want at least one carpeted area or I would invest in a really squishy soft rug!
I love having hardwood, but we only have it downstairs. Upstairs has rugs and it cuts down on the noise traffic. TBS, hardwood with area rugs would be my preference if we were redoing our upstairs!

We ripped out all of the carpet in our previous house (when I was pregnant with DD), and put in hardwood. There were pros and cons. Like we liked that since DD would spit up a ton, we weren't constantly cleaning the carpet....we were able to just wipe it up. But once she was mobile, it made it harder to keep her on the rug and she was constantly falling backwards and smacking her head (I totally contemplated getting one of those tumbling helmets for wearing in the house). If I could have done it over again, I would have done hardwood throughout the the house and then carpet in the bedrooms, especially since a lot of the times we would lay around and play on the floor. Rugs are sometimes a b*tch to clean, especially if you get a shag one.
Most of our house, including bedrooms are hardwood, which I love because they are so easy to care for. We do have wall to wall berber carpet in our family room because it was an addition to the house. The berber is easy to clean and I do like having that one room carpeted. It is where we spend the most time and J plays most often.
I can't speak for stairs because I live in a ranch.
My house is 100% hardwood and I'd rather have carpet in the bedrooms. The wood floor is just so cold and hard and not comfy to sit and play on. We do have a 4x6 rug in her room, but there's still lots of wood floor showing. I grew up in a house with all carpet and loved sprawling on the floor to play or read, and I miss that.

I prefer hardwood since carpet holds filth and smell. That said, I think we're replacing our bedroom with carpet due to price. We just can't afford wood or a nice enough laminate to not look cheap right now.
We have all hardwood floors. I have indoor allergies and carpets hold so many allergens. I was worried how DD would do on the hardwood when she was a baby but she was totally fine. Crawled on it and learned to walk on it with no problems.
I like having carpet in the bedrooms. At our new house (if we ever sell the old one and get to move in), we plan on doing hardwoods throughout the main floor, except for the family room. I would prefer hardwood in the family room, but DH really likes carpet in the family room.
We got our carpet removed last year and did hard woods so our main floor is all hard wood. We have a large rug in the living room and in DS's room to help keep the dog from sliding around. Hardwood is so much easier to keep clean for us especially with having a dog. We put padding on our stairs to make them softer to walk on. It has not been an issue for us.
We have hardwood through most of the house. We love it. As PPs said, it is so much easier to keep clean. And try as I might to have DS sit at the table and eat...his food and crumbs still end up everywhere...or spilled milk. I prefer that it happens on the hardwood because it is just an easy wipe or quick dustbusting.

Our house is all hardwood (actually pine planks upstairs!) except for the stairs and the main room downstairs where the stairs land. I like having carpeted stairs. If I were you I would go hardwood with a runner. 21-month old DS can do the stairs in our place no problem but I'd be more hesitant if they were wood.
