I have an HE though, and my second wash cycle with detergent takes almost two hours to complete. About an hour of it is washing in detergent. It's crazy long, but my diapers get clean.
I should edit my post, (but don't know how) to say my HE FL is getting old, and I do heavy soil, extra rinse, and water plus feature on it and it goes for 110 minutes......and I hate my washer and wish I could get a new one.
I think this is something the fb group found in doing research but I don't have time tonight to go back through and find the source tonight. Freezorburn do you remember?
Is it Grovia who said this? Whatever the source, HE definitely takes longer than non-HE
Ding ding ding! Correct. The article we have doesn't specify HE or non HE, but I have been taking it that way, given the huge differences in cycle times and the less rigorous mechanical action of HEs.
I have an old top loader. I think the max agitation time I can set is 15 minutes. Remember this if I start complaining about stink later on. No stink issues thus far.

This. Mine is 12 minutes - sometimes I let it soak first but usually I'm in a hurry. No issues here.
Are HE machines really better if they run for over an hour???
As long as they're getting clean, who cares how many minutes they're agitating? People hand washing their diapers probably aren't agitating them for 45-50 minutes.
I don't know how long my main wash is. It's the longest available (HE), but it doesn't seem like a crazy length of time. We can do rinse/wash/rinse/transfer to dryer after getting home from work without issue.
I did lengthen my main wash cycle after reading that article and it seems to have been final piece of the puzzle in solving my ON stink issue.
If I let my diaper go am extra day before washing I'll put them on the heavy duty cycle so they agitate a bit longer. I have a water sense TL and I think the regular cycle with extra rinse is 45 minutes and the heavy duty is about an hour. So maybe 20-25 minutes of detergent /agitation? I seem to be avoiding stick this far.
I have a FL HE. The heavy duty cycle is an hour and half, I think? I have no idea how long the diapers are actually agitating in detergent (and don't really care). I do a prewash and extra rinse so it ends up being over 2 hours.
I have an old school top loader. My who wash routine takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, and we've had no issues in ten months regardless of detergent used. (Dealt with yeast twice; no other issues in 13 months)

My understanding of it was they need to be in the detergent water that long they don't necessarily need to be agitating that long.....which is why a lot of people doing the handwashing challenge found it beneficial to agitate for a few, walk away, come back agitate a few more and repeat the agitate/soak cycle a few times before moving on to rinsing. Not sure why old top loaders don't seem to need the same amount of time for washing - I refuse to claim knowledge on the mechanics of wash machine operation.
