I bought a RNP a while ago through a Black Friday deal, thinking I'd use that for a newborn sleeper in our room at night until LO moves to the crib. However, I have since read that newborns should be sleeping on a flat surface, and am now wondering if I should also buy a bassinet. Or a pack and play.
I've also been looking at the Moby wrap or K'tan wrap, but am worried that I'm going to have a rough time figuring them out.
Exchange it for a Graco Little Lounger! It works like a RNP and is about the same size, but it reclines flat. We have one and will be using it in our room.
Great tip, thank you!
Question for all: is getting both a RnP-type thing and a simple bouncer redundant? I feel like the bouncer would be good for stuff like putting the baby on the kitchen counter while I do some cooking (we have a dog so no unsupervised floor baby in this house!) or moving it to the bathroom so I can shower, but I'm also leery of amassing a whole bunch of equipment that essentially does the same thing.
We picked up the new Britax B-Safe 35 seat last weekend, I didnt get the stroller tho because I personally dont like the 3 wheel look. The car seat is very nice and in comparison felt much lighter than the Chicco I had originally planned to get.
It is a nice seat! What stroller are you getting to go with it? I think they have a 4 wheel model now. I'm the opposite- I really want a 3 wheel just because to me it seems less bulky.
I plan to breastfeed but I will probably also be pumping so DD and SO can help with feeding every now and then. Any STM+ have preferences for bottles while breastfeeding?
I went with 2 diff kinds to start with for this baby. The Tommee Tippee and Advent. I got 3 of each.
My DD hated the Dr Brown, not to mention the tons of parts so I didn't even bother this time.
What did your DH say about the Britax system? This is the one I'm considering, we're gonna go to BBB this weekend to check it out (I've only searched the online reviews).
He didn't like the way the carrier connected to the stroller on the sides. He didn't think it seemed as secure as the strollers that have a tray or bar that the carrier fits/clicks onto. Let me know what you think of it when you go look!
Jumping in here... we finally settled on the Britax travel system! I have lost so much sleep over strollers/travel systems/infant carriers so FWIW dukwok here is my 2 cents: My husband had the opposite thought, he shook it around quite a bit and it felt quite secure. He is also team 3-wheel because he says 3 points of contact have more stability than 4, so there is that. I think for us the big deciding factor was that a) the stroller was very easy to fold (we played with a bunch of models and couldn't get a handful of them to fold, and then one that we did fold we could not for the life of us get back open so we just left it) and b) it is decently compact when it is folded. I mean it's no umbrella stroller, but compared to the way the other travel systems look folded down it really isn't that huge.

One more question for today: STERILIZERS. Are they necessary? A friend of mine swears up and down and side to side that we MUST have one, but it seems like a bit of overkill. Just wondering what thoughts anyone might have on the matter. Isn't a good wash with soap and hot water enough?

I don't think it's redundant. The Little Lounger is for sleeping at night and can also be used for naps. The bouncer is more for play time and looking around and a place to put baby when you need to do something (as long as they're close by of course). It's nice for baby to be somewhat upright when you're playing with them. I plan on using the LL in the same way i'd use a crib, except it can rock and it's more portable.

Not necessary IMO. Bottles can be sterilized in a pot of boiling water on the stove or in a high heat setting in the dishwasher. I've never needed one.
Is anyone planning on using or ever used gDiapers? I don't think I could go full on cloth but these seem like a happy medium between cloth and disposables. I started reading up on them but i'd like to hear real life experiences if anyone has used them before or knows someone who has.

I babysat a friends daughter who had them a few times. They are easy to use, and you can pre make up diapers to make changes easier. They also have some flexibility with the inserts you can throw away or with urine compost. That's not really good info though, since I don't have more than a passing knowledge. They are definitely less scary to me than other CD types.

Thanks for both your feedback stratto814 and seventythree! We're looking for something that is relatively light weight, easy to handle, but not "junky" as DH puts it. I'll let you know what he thinks stratto814

My LC recommended The First Years Breastflow bottles, DD took to them just fine. We'll try the same this time around

I used Avent for both my kids and those worked fine, but i'm looking at the Tommee Tippee ones this time around. Haven't decided which ones to get yet.
Regarding the bottles for breastfeeding question, look into the Kiinde system. You pump into the bags and the bags go right into the bottle. If your LO does not like the nipple on it, they are compatible with most other nipples.
And regarding putting the not-so-cute items on your registry, I did a secret Amazon registry so that I can still use the discount on all those essentials (breast pads, lanolin, manual pump, etc).
And with gdiapers, I have a friend using them. It is definitely not as cost effective as the other CD options but people like them. A lot of people say not to go with all the same kind since you never know what LO will like. AND you may be surprised to find that the AIO cloth diapers or pockets are actually easier than the hybrid type. That's all anecdotal though; I am planning to CD but have no experience... Yet!
jezebk Thanks for the advice! I really think I may go with the rental option.
beeorange Check with your insurance on the pump. I know you said you have Medicaid but I think with the new health care plan all insurance companies have to cover a pump. They don't have to cover anything else, but that is one thing they do.
This is me too. And this is my second kid so I'm not registering or having a shower or whatever so I'm trying to find an economical way to do it. We have the Britax infant seat, and ideally I would love the Britax double stroller that the infant seat clicks in to but it's SUPER expensive. The sit and stand will accept the Britax seat as well (with an adapter), but I don't think I'd like the front and back double strollers. (In the long run, I think I'd rather have one where they sit side by side.
UGH, I'm like you smile55k, I don't think I'll ever decide. I'm thinking about just wearing the baby and putting my daughter in the stroller until he can sit up, and then purchasing a used side by side double stroller. We'll see!
I've decided just to wing it. I plan to just wear the baby and DD can use the stroller when needed. As they get older, we do have one of those bike trailer things that doubles as a stroller, but we obviously couldn't use that until probably next summer. If needed, I'll just get one used on Craigslist if I find myself really wanting one.
This is probably what I'll end up doing since I'm so indecisive. I'm constantly checking craigslist for used ones, I found one sit & stand, but when I messaged the seller, their reply seemed kinda shady so I didn't want to meet in person.
Regarding putting breast care items on the registry, I say go for it. I actually got the "embarrassing" breastfeeding essentials (and a lot of good advice in their card) as a shower gift from two of my good friends who were currently nursing their little ones. I loved it! You never know who might buy it for you, and if nothing else you can get it wih your completion coupon discount!
I'm undecided on a stroller - I want/need a bassinet style one, but haven't come across one that made me want to buy it yet.
Have you checked out the Valco Spark? It's the single version of the double that I want. The seat turns into a bassinet! It's pretty cool. The con would be that only certain infant seats can be attached and you have to buy that attachment separately. www.valcobaby.com/products/strollers/model/spark.html
thank you for suggesting this! I sent a link to my sister to ask her opinion and she just surprised me by buying it for me! Also - it's even cheaper on Amazon (we loved the grey one and for some reason it was the cheapest one way anyway
I need a new infant seat. My first two used a Chicco KeyFit 30 but it was bulky. Since I'm doing three across for a little while, I need something narrow and I can't decide if I want to Britax B-Safe or not.
Bulky? I have a tiny car and picked that seat because I thought I had read that it's good for smaller cars. Was a wrong!?
My dilemma involves double strollers... The Valco Spark Duo or the Bumbleride Indie Twin?? I am leaning towards the Valco but I don't know anyone nearby who owns one nor is it possible to see a floor model at any local stores. They are basically only drop shipped because the brand isn't very popular in the states. I have a friend who owns a different Valco duo version but she lives 4 hours away - bah! I just really want to see/maneuver/touch the thing IRL first before purchasing.
I have a Valco (albeit single) and a Bumbleride Indie Twin. I tried out both the Valco and Bumbleride singles and doubles and my 2 cents is the Valco is superior for a single stroller but the Bumbleride is by far the best double.
I'm now getting rid of my Valco because I have the Bumbleride. I'm sad about it, but the Bumbleride is so fucking awesome I would have another baby just to keep using it. (that's a lie, but I do love it)
ETA: We got the Bumbleride off of Craigslist for $50. If anyone is looking to get a more expensive stroller and but is iffy on spending the money, Craigslist!! Granted $50 was kind of an anomaly for an $800 stroller (moving sale), but I've seen a lot on there for $200 or so.
I know the quality is definitely amazing with the Bumble, but the bassinet is separate and super expensive! The Valco that I want has a seat that turns into a bassinet and you can change the way each seat faces individually. I think functionally, it suits my needs a little better. The Bumble is just so swoon-worthy!

Please don't put a bouncer on an elevated surface. It's not safe. You're just going to have to set some boundaries with your dog.

Awesome! Amazon FTW! I hope you love it! Are you planning on attaching an infant seat to it? I'm thinking of getting the grey as well in the double version. I just need to make up my mind already.

Do you mean the car seat adapter or something else? If it's the car seat, then no - my LO needs a special car seat because he has an abdominal wall defect (hence the need for a bassinet stroller where he can lay instead of sitting up all the time) - but that car seat is $2k alone but luckily my insurance is picking up the tab

I meant if you were planning on attaching an infant car seat with the adapter to it - just because only certain seats work with it. But that makes sense that you won't be doing that. That's great that your insurance will cover the seat! I'm glad I could help you find a stroller

Well, the base is kind of wide BUT I'm doing three across in a Jeep Liberty so take my opinion with a grain of salt. It was also a 21 lb seat, and carrying it around was no fun. It's a superb seat and super user-friendly. Easiest install of any seat we've owned.
I know, I'm still stuck on double strollers.... But what are your opinions on side by side vs front and back? I was convinced I wanted front and back (for fitting through doorways and such) but now I'm not sure.

Fair enough! As ignorant as this might make me sound I totally thought that was a thing (to clarify I didn't mean put it up on the table while vibrating, just using it as a seat), but apparently I was mistaken. Thought maybe I had mixed up "bouncer" with some other baby gear - if nothing else I know my parents used to set me on the kitchen table in some infant holder or another - but the Googles have set me straight.

To add to this don't put the car seat or bumbo on the counter either. Many, many parents do this but there is always the potential for the baby to fall off of the counter and be injured. I didn't know this wasn't "allowed" and used to put DD in her Bumbo on the table. One day she tipped the Bumbo and if I would'nt have been standing right there she would have fallen off of the table and gotten really hurt.
Also, you aren't supposed to put the infant seats on top of grocery carts. They don't actually lock in and can fall out of the cart causing injury. (Not trying to sound preachy, just putting it out there. I didn't know all this stuff with DD).
Preaching infant safety isn't preachy IMO. I didn't know shit about car seat safety until I read some things on TD and started researching

Chiming in, I have a moby and it's great for the first 4 weeks or so but then we will be in the heat of summer and it's not practical in airports etc. I love my Beco Gemini and couldn't live with out it. It is my #1 baby item and what I recommend to all my friends who are going to be new moms.
I didn't get a chance to read everyone's posts, but can anyone recommend a specific brand of washable breast pads that they like? I went through so many disposable with DS, that I'm ready for something more reuseable. I was thinking of trying bamboobies but want to know if the investment is worth it!
