What is your favorite thing about where you live? What is your least favorite? I LOVE PHILLY. My favorite thing is the history, but it's also something intangible. I grew up in a suburb of Philly, but I lived in Boston for several years and NY before that. I never felt "at home" in Boston or NY. I felt like an outsider. I came back to Philly for graduate school and immediately felt "home." I belong here.
Least favorite? Um. Hmm. Public transit could be better!
Married DH 09/21/13 BCP 08/08-02/12, 01/13-08/14 Paragard 02/16-? TTC#1 August '14 1st BFP 3/9/15! EDD: 11/17/15 Emma Rose born 11/26/15 (Thanksgiving!)
What's your favorite time of the year? Spring! I wanted so badly to be marred in April, but the hotel didn't offer dinner on the beach until May. So, we got married May 5th.
You can travel anywhere, all expenses paid. Where would you choose to go? What would you do? Pitcairn Island. I love the story of The Bounty and its mutiny. Pitcairn is where the mutineers (and some Tahitians) set up a colony. It's so interesting for historical and scientific reasons. It has a lot of problems these days, however. It's sad.
What is your biggest pet peeve? THROAT CLEARING. That's a fast way for me to get seriously annoyed with you.
What was your favorite ride at WDW? The Haunted Mansion!
What do you love most about Mr. Joy? The way he loves. Not just me, but his family, my family, our nieces and nephews, his friends. He has such a big heart.
What's your love story (how did you meet, was it love at first sight, romance budding from friendship, etc.)?
We met one of the first days of college. We both were freshman and in a class together. We were friendly for about three years. Jay definitely wanted to hook up with me but I was off kissing basically everyone else.
When the majority of my friends went abroad spring semester of junior year, I found college to be lonely. Jay was still around so we ended up hanging out more and more. He still wanted to hook up so I obliged. I never really thought it would grow to anything, but by senior year, we were serious.
We were too serious for being 21 years old. We dated until a year post graduation (long distance) and then broke up spectacularly at a wedding where he was the best man. I was devastated. He was devastated. But, it was the right decisions for a host of reasons.
For two years, we did our own thing with some contact here and there. Admittedly, there was the obligatory blurring of lines when we saw each other. He went to law school; I went to graduate school. Eventually, we started calling more and more often. The word "love" was used a lot.
I firmly said no to getting back together. NO. I had good reasons. He understood. He started dating someone else. He called one day to tell me about her. I was fine with it.
...Until a few days later when I felt like I couldn't breathe. It took me a few more days, but I finally mustered up the courage to call him and pour my heart out. He listened and politely hung up.
That weekend, we were supposed to be attending my college roommate's wedding together. I was the maid of honor. He called me the day before to say he'd broken up with his girlfriend. My awkward response was "Oh. Really?"
I got to the hotel the next day before him. He called and said he was outside. I ran...literally RAN to the hotel lobby. He ran across the lobby. We hugged. We kissed. We never ever looked back.
We moved in together about two years later. We got engaged a year after that. He brought me back to our alma mater and proposed outside the classroom where we first met. We married two years after that in Bermuda. We're my siggy picture.
He's my heart. The story obviously has more complications than what I wrote, but all of it makes us who we are. I regret nothing about how it all went down.
What is your biggest regret? I don't think I have one. I would like to be closer with my father. He's very much in my life and always has been, but I want to know him more now that we're both adults.
Greatest accomplishment? Getting my Ph.D. Hands down. I dreamed of my defense day the way some people dream of their wedding days. It was the greatest, most awesome struggle of my life, but it sculpted so much of who I am. I say undergrad is where I learned to love another (my husband), but grad school is where I learned to love myself.
If you were going to be stuck on a deserted island, what three items would you want with you? A computer with internet access?? I would forgo the other two for that one! Hehe.
Also, is this the same AMA that we set up over at The Dump? Who has the spreadsheet for that? I feel like my time should be coming up...
What is your favorite scent? Oh man... laundry. I love standing outside and smelling the hot air from the vent. I'm weird, guys.
What food do you enjoy that others may find questionable? rock hard cookies. Soft cookies are gross. I actually put chocolate chip cookies in the fridge.
What's your dream job? Being my own boss. I like the idea of having a bakery or a bookstore. I also love the idea of writing non-fiction books.
What is the one thing you geek out about the most? Knowledge. If I know about it, I know ALL ABOUT IT. And I'll tell you about it. I try really really REALLY hard to not be obnoxious and just share what I know. I probably fail a lot.
What are your guilty pleasure baby names? I'll define "guilty pleasure" as ones that do not at all fit what I think a name should be, but I love anyway.
Boy: Baron. (Baron is a title, like naming your kid king, which is completely ridiculous.)
Girl: Hera (Hera was Zeus's wife. It's akin to naming your kid king).
If you could have any animal at all as a pet what would it be?
Tell me your thoughts on second baby showers? I kid, I kid. /ded. Don't make me tell you.
What is your favorite wine? I like dry wines or very light white wines. I usually pick from sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, pinot noir, merlot, or cabernet. I also really like champagne! Reisling and ice wine get all the side eyes from me.
What made you want to be a scientist? In college, I wanted to pick a major that challenged me. I had planned to go for physics, but I couldn't for reasons. In the end, I was picking between chemistry and french. I picked chemistry. My parents freaked.
I got a Ph.D. because I wondered if I could. That is the absolute WORST reason to try and get a Ph.D. But, there it is.
I really like science and I'm good at it. But, I never had a career plan so I have a Ph.D. and am wondering wtf I want to do with it.
What is your dream vacation? Pitcairn Island. I discussed it another post! Obviously we'd stay a few days in Tahiti, as well.
