Not that this is excusable at all, but I feel like the design of a lot of popular sippy cups is ripe for mold development. That's why I wish that DS wouldn't pull the straws out of the take n toss sippies because those are so simple with just 2 parts that can be fully taken apart to wash.
Just saw this on my other board too. So gross! I asked there if anyone has ever cut a bath squirt toy to see if there is mold in those? I saw an article about that too and have been wanting to. I saw on Pinterest you can use a hot glue dot on the holes so water doesn't get in but I want to check ours before buying new!

I never buy stuff with straws because they're so difficult to clean properly. Not sure how I'll deal with sippy cups, but this has convinced me to be careful and to buy stuff with clear parts.
This sort of thing happens with those bulb snot suckers, too, buyer beware.
We used a couple of Tommee Tippee sippy cups but they had a silicone cover that popped off of the valve and allowed us to clean them with no issue. I'm with babyzebra that this is an issue with the design of most sippy cups, so Tommee Tippee probably isn't alone.
Bath toys have a pretty short shelf life in our house. DS loves rubber ducks, particularly filling them with water and squeezing them, so we just swap them out frequently so they don't have a chance to get too gross.

Yes! I love those damn take n toss straw cups but DS is always pulling out the straw. I'm wondering if I could MacGyver something to make it so he can't take them out. Hot glue? Rubber band?
I think every soppy cup can get moldy, it seems like they all have some little crevice that's hard to clean. But yikes, this seems to be trapped and hidden. Who designs that?
Even if you don't use Dr. Browns bottles, get one of their bottle brushes...it comes with a tiny brush that will clean straws and tiny places.

Love the Nose Frida. DS hates it but it truly is amazing how much snot can come out of a such a little nose.
We love the munchkin spout less cups. Not a fan of straw cups because of cleaning them but I do have a few just because they are good for oral motor exercise and development. I replace them frequently though.
