We'll probably do something small- just family. I doubt we'll do a ton of decorations . I'll probably get some balloons- A loves those! And I'll make the cake just like I did last year. It will probably just be family this year. Maybe when he turns 3 we'll start involving more of his friends.

We usually do a small house party with a few friends - of ours the first few years then the kids' once they have them. We actually just finished up DD1's fourth birthday party yesterday. We invited 2 little friends and their families since at this age it's just easiest for the guests to include siblings. I like the small party because I enjoy planning parties but I don't want to spend $$$. Very few of DD1's peers do birthday parties at this age, but her guests seem to have fun and so does she.
I am stumped on DD2's birthday this year. Unfortunately our new baby is due about 2 weeks before DD2. Either we'll do something early or we'll just let my mom plan a family celebration I think. As a family DH always decorates a fantastic cake and we eat whatever the birthday girl selects. The cake takes hours and is usually a big production because the icing isn't right or something.
One really cute idea I saw if you just want to make your kid feel special is to decorate the kitchen in the interest of the year, get paper plates to match, and use those all day. That way for one day you're acknowledging something your child loves and making them celebrated. We already do so much between having a small party and that $%*#( cake that I don't have the energy.
We Will do family only parties (grandparents, aunts/uncle's, cousins) until school-age. Then, we'll probably just do some cake and ice cream with grandparents and have a slumber party with a couple school friends until whenever it becomes 'not cool' lol.
We didn't do a party for his first birthday and wont be doing one again. He is totally welcome to have parties once he is school age. Last year the 3 of us went to the zoo and had a picnic. This year, we may go on a weekend trip out of town and do an MLB game + kids discovery center or the state fair, or we may stay home and do the indoor playground here, or maybe the zoo again, or find a place to swim. I think I am also going to invite our playgroup friends to do a lunch at the zoo during the week, just as a fun playdate.
I am all about doing birthdays as a fun day for the 3, eventually 4 of us. We run around pleasing people on holidays, so I want birthdays to be about just us having fun as a family unit.

We do a family birthday party for the first birthday. For later birthdays we do cake and ice cream and gifts at breakfast (DH works second shift) and then I've taken the day off work and spent the day on a special outing with the birthday girl. So far that's usually been the zoo or children's museum. I'm not sure how that will evolve as they age.
I considered a friends party for DD1 last year (she turned 5), but chickened out.
We do a big party for the first birthday then until they are old enough to have real friends, we just have dinner with the grandparents. This year we let J pick the meal and dessert and he loved it. And H usually ends up working late the night before and comes home with balloons for them to wake up to. Those will be our traditions. I'm not a big party person though. The first birthday party is plenty for me.
Probably just have family. No idea about themes. DS birthday is in two weeks, so that's my primary birthday focus right now. For his birthday, we'll just invite family. He has a lot of cousins, so it's always a good time. We may do something with a few of his friends on his actual birthday. We'll see, though.

I think we will just do grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins. If my family can come from out of state (It's summer and we live at the beach....so they will likely come) it will be 12 adult guests and 2 kids.
I plan to steal cdseno balloon tradition. The dollar store by my house has Elmo balloons. Also, I'll just make it look like Elmo exploded all over the house with all those silly plates, cups, party hats, etc. My family typically does ice cream cakes, so I'll get one of those, plus an Elmo cake from the grocery store. You can never have too much leftover cake!
Unless his love for Elmo dies in the next 6 mo....then we won't have a theme.

I actually want to take DS to a few indoor play places to see if he likes it for a potential birthday party location. I found his first birthday exhausting! So much prep before and clean up after. I want to go to a place and not have to worry about it. Also this time I'll have a two month old so I can't put all that energy into Pinterest and etsy crafts.

DNW to think about her birthday party yet. It's still 6 months out.
But I'm in a family wedding on her birthday, so probably no party this year. Going forward probably just grandparents until she's old enough to have some friends.
