Just stopping in to ask about wet diapers and when your milk came in.
Isa has been soooo sleepy. She cluster feeds from 11pm-2am but then we have to set the alarm twice between 2am and 7am to wake her up and feed her. She feeds regularly throughout the day. All the nurses said she had a great latch and was swallowing, but now that we're home, I'm so scared she's not getting enough or that she's dehydrated (she has made her dirty diaper counts, but is barely making her wet diaper deadlines, and the last one had a little uric crystal in it).
If I undress her and tickle her, she feeds well for about 20 minutes, but I'm still worried it's not enough. Anxious for my milk to come in!
Odds are everything is fine. But go see a LC. It's wonderful to hear that all is well.
While you are in the hospital, ask to see an LC! Even if you think things are perfect, ask anyway. I EP'd for a freaking year because I didn't know to ask. I had heard so much that breast feeding wasn't easy at first that I just assumed our latch problems were normal and no big deal. I gave up without asking for help. It will not be the end of the world if you EP or formula feed but now that I know a LC could have helped I wish all the time that I had asked.
Don't assume the nurses will get one to come see you if they think you need help because they will not. My plan this time around is to ask to see an LC before the end of day one, no matter how I think things are going because I know that their experienced eyes may see something I don't.

Saw the LC this morning. K has a slight upper lip tie, I have oversupply, and she sucks her bottom lip in too much so she's not latching correctly. All these things are contributing to the nipple pinching. She gave me some tips to help work around the issues but the main one with the bottom lip will mostly go away as she grows. So I'll start up breastfeeding again and keep it up until it gets too painful then go back to pumping.
I thought breastfeeding was going to be the easy part of parenting. Hahahahaha.

I had 2 kids with lip ties. One was severe- that I didn't know about. He still has it at almost 12. The other is a moderate one. Neither have been fixed. Nursing was NOT FUN in the beginning. With the severe tie, there was bleeding. Often. NOT FUN. But, it did get better! And once he figured out what to do, we had a wonderful breastfeeding relationship.

The hospital I delivered at offers a breastfeeding warm line with LCs so I called today about my short, sleepy eater. She suggested switch nursing or switch breastfeeding. Basically switching breasts back and forth before LO falls asleep and doing the various methods already discussed to keep him awake for each breast. Then keep switching until I can literally no longer keep him awake. And by golly, it worked! We extended our session to 15 minutes instead of these short little bursts of nursing. It's a bit of a hassle, but I was able to relieve both breasts and LO seems to have had a full meal in one session.

Omg my boobs hurt. I pumped at 6am then we had a pediatrician appointment this morning so I brought a bottle. She fell asleep in the car and is still asleep in her car seat. Its taking everything in my power not to pump. I may have to wake her up if she sleeps any longer.

I know you mentioned an oversupply - can you hand express until you feel comfortable?

This is a good idea. I knew there was a reason I hang out with you guys.
My bewbs weigh 50 each. Ouch! I made lactation cookies from kveller.com so yummy. I ate them before I had the baby, lol. Will try another batch tomorrow.
SheilaTheTank I usually pump to take the edge of and if little man decides he likes my boobs at the time, he will nurse and they aren't so engorged he has issues latching.
FunniBunni , since you mention it, do you (or anyone) have any supply issue tips? I had huge supply issues with both DDs before so anything that might head it off early would be appreciated.
If you mean low supply problems, there's a lot of food you can try that is supposed to help, besides the herbs and supplements you can take. I tried for 100oz of water every day. That's a huge one! I also made a smoothie every morning that made a huge difference! Recipe: 1 banana Large Scoop of peanut butter 1/2 cup oatmeal (not the quick oats) Tablespoon-ish of Brewers yeast Tablespoon-ish of flax seed meal A few ice cubes Cover with chocolate almond milk Blend I didn't measure everything perfectly, just threw it in. It tastes like a chocolate milkshake and seriously boosted my supply. If I missed a day I really noticed. You can get Brewers yeast and flax seed meal at Sprouts or another store like it. ETA: this is what I would have for breakfast and it would keep me full until lunch most days.
Thank you! It's day 5 and I think my milk is coming in, but not quickly... I had this for breakfast today and it was delicious!
Has anyone used or know anything about breast shields? Since baby boy is drinking a few bottles and latching on I feel he gets lazy and only wants to be on the breast for a short period of time. Any suggestions?

I on day 5 too and my boobs are huge. I tried pumping and I've gotten only drops...a little discouraging. Today, I tried heat compressions and manual pump and that actually worked a bit better than electric pump

What pump are you using? And how many hours in between are you pumping. I've been attempting to pump and have gotten drops maybe 1/2 oz if that

Today my boobs ache and feel heavy, but they're not rock hard and spraying milk everywhere or anything. When I hand express, or try to, just a few drops come out. They are white and milky now, and the baby feeds for 15 minutes at a time, so al that is good, but yeah, I was envisioning rivers and sprays, so now I'm letting myself get worried.
The pediatrician says lots of moms make plenty of milk but don't have this dramatic change and worry it's not enough because of the stories they've heard from other moms. They will weigh LO again at the doctor tomorrow, and FX she has started to regain birth weight! I think that will boost my confidence about supply. You and I just have to keep in mind that every body and every baby is different. We can do this!

I've only used shields for a short period of time when my nipples felt like they were on fire. Once we got the hang of it, I stop using them. Shields didn't do anything to help with prolonging feedings in my case.

Medela pump through insurance. Im down to pumping once when I first get up, once around 6pm and once before I go to bed. Im breastfeeding from 9-5 and MOTN but the latch sucks and it hurts. I massage my boobs while pumping, drink a ton of water, and eat oatmeal in the morning. If my supply dips, like today, I add in extra pumping sessions.

I have the opposite problem, LO gets annoyed at the slow pace of the bottle and squeals in frustration while eating. Im debating switching to a faster flow nipple.

With my DD I didn't get the milk spraying everywhere for a few months I think, and even then it was only if she pulled off during a let down. Also I never really got the rock hard boobs except if she started missing feedings or being later. I remember all the same freak outs you are having because I expected my boobs to be exploding and it didn't happen.
Know too that my dd took FOREVER to get back up to birth weight, over 2 weeks. But once she started she went from 6 lbs 11 oz at 10 days old (born at 7 lbs 3 oz from day 5-10 she didn't gain anything at all and was 6 lbs 10 oz) to 8 lbs 15 oz at 5 weeks old lol.

Yes, we can! With my first BFing was a breeze. I know I shouldn't compare but, I just assumed it would be the same

Thank for the info. I'm thinking of trying it for a bit. I think it cost about $7-8.

Baby boy sleeps for about 3hrs sessions or so. I latch him on as often as possible but he does get a bottle of formula every other feeding so I've been trying to pump in between. I have the medela pump too. I'm trying to get the hang of it.

Baby boy seems to like the Medela nipples. But it seems like a fast flow so that's why he gets frustrated on the boob

We do the NUK bottles. My mom was in dentistry for a billion years so she's pretty hardcore about the orthodontic friendly nipples. LO seems to like them so they work for us.
How much nipple soreness is just like normal adjusting soreness? Any thoughts. Baby has been feeding like a champ. I am definitely a bit sore. The nurse checked my nipples and helped me with the latch, she said both looked pretty good, at first she was latching a bit shallow but now I have been better about getting her on deeper but it still feels a bit intense
